I've only been to two of the places on the list: Boulevard and Shanghai 1930. Boulevard is way overpriced for the close-to-catering fare that is served there. Shanghai 1930 is fine. I don't know if I would want to be down there by myself, though.

When I read the thread title I thought it was going to be about this new trend of "communal tables" for solo dinners, singles who want to socialize, walk-ins, etc.
As of lately, I've seen those at the Salt House, Pres-a-Vi, Terzo and Asia de Cuba.

I completely agree with your assessment of Boulevard. Would much rather eat at the bar at Gary Danko for that kind of coin.

For what it is worth, I have very much enjoyed counter dinners at Boulevard. I also, happily, go anywhere I want by myself whether or not they have a dedicated solo travelers area. The security of a communal setting is very nice, but don't let it stop you from just going and enjoying your meal if it is not available.

Beretta has a communal table, and has good bar service for solo diners.

I agree with that 100%. The bar area always seems to be congenial, and it's great to be able to eat at GD when I have an unexpected trip to SF and can't make a reservation in advance.
