Nice hotels near the Presidio

Hi all,

I am looking to stay near the Presidio for a night or two. All the hotels I am finding nearby seem to be of the Travelodge variety. Are there any 4*, or nice 3*, hotels that you could recommend nearby? I am pretty familiar with all the hotels by Union Square and Fisherman's Wharf, so I am really looking for something smack outside of the Presidio. If all else fails I will stay in Union Square.

Thanks.

Nothing 4* or even 3* there, but some boutique B&B type hotels exist in the Marina. Otherwise the best bet is the Hotel del Sol, which is an old 1950s motel that has been renovated to be "luxury" (with mixed success). http://www.jdvhospitality.com/hotels/hotel/5

That's what I was afraid of.

Thanks. Have you or anyone you know stayed there, or is this "the word on the street" about Hotel del Sol?

P.S. (and terribly OT) - You've been here long enough, shouldn't you be the new Number 2?

If you want to be near the Presidio, you might as well cross the bridge and stay in Sausalito.^

Me again
I've just remembered there is this B&B down the street from where I live. It's 5 blocks from the Presidio.

Union Street is *way* nicer than Lombard.

That looks like a winner. Excellent location as well.

I'd second the "winner" location. If you are going to have a car, make sure you are clear on the parking situation as it will be offsite and maybe not great immediate access.

I'm late to the party, but I can recommend the Hotel Drisco - about 4 blocks from the Presidio Street entrance to the Presidio, up on Pacific Heights.

Very nice hotel. I had my parents stay there for my wedding.

Wow! I had no idea there were such nice little hotels around there.

Like EastBay said above, be clear about parking. It is very scarce around there (and in S.F., generally). I doubt that you want to be searching for street parking.

Come on, let's be accurate now, Number 6 never was Number 2, he turned out to be Number 1!

(I know, it sounds like an obscure reference, but certainly there will be others who know it.)

Such is life. Now that I've been outed, if only I can be as droll as McGoohan.

Personally I would stay at the Miyako hotel in Japantown (they have some very nice japanese suites, complete with tatami mats). But it isn't that close to the Presidio.

Ah yes, it has been years since I have seen the Prisoner.

Thank you everyone for some excellent suggestions. I need to investigate the properties mentioned above to see what will work best for us. But they all look great. Mrs. kef0913 and I would love to stay in Japantown, Number_6, but the kids wouldn't go for the tatami mats.

No, no, no on Japantown. There is no real Japantown. It is a city economic development plan that failed. It is an artificial community in a bad location. It's almost as pathetic as Fisherman's Wharf.
