6.5 Hour layover at SFO - Time to go into the city?
I have a 6.5 hour layover in SFO with my wife and 2 teenagers. We arrive from Vancouver on UA and fly out on BR to TPE. We have access to the new Amex lounge but I was thinking of going into the city for dinner.
We like Ruth Chris Steakhouse which is at 1601 Van Ness Ave. Do we have time to go there for dinner? Any recommendations on getting there?
Haven't been to San Francisco in years.
TIA

This comprehensive thread right at the top of this first page of the forum details lots of option for layovers of different lengths, many similar to yours.
A taxi from the airport into the city should take 30-40 mins depending on the traffic.

If the SFO Centurion Lounge is anything like the LAS lounge
I wouldn't bother going into SF....almost.

I'd go in with 6.5 hours. Just make sure youu plan it so that you have reliable transportation back to SFO when it's time to return.
See the thread mentioned above for ideas.

Bart to Powell will get you to the heart of the tourist area, and Burbon Steak

Ride the exposed outside glass elevators after dinner for added fun.

If that's not to you liking, try Harris steak house.

You will need to take a cab for that one. The eating at any of these 3 is nothing short of fantastic.
If you want a little more traditional. Bobs chop house on is fantastic as well, Bobs is probably the most like Ruth Chris.

I would concur that Ruth's Chris is a poor choice from a food standpoint but if you are set on it, it's a cab ride rather than a BART ride. 30 minutes should be fine outside rush hour

Thanks for the great replies!! I went on the websites and read some reviews and I am thinking that Bourbon Steak will be the beast all around experience.
Looking forward to a great meal and walking around that area.

How was bourbon? I like Ruth Chris but prefer the Japanese at Alexander the most, despite the high cost. I try to just eat 4-6 oz of beef anyway because of being on weight watchers.
