# Firefighters are responding to a huge fire burning on a hillside in the San Bruno area. Many residents have reported seeing a plane go down. Others felt a huge shock wave, and heard an explosion. Entire city blocks are on fire in a residential neighborhood and evacuations are taking place
update: KGO reports that both the FAA and SFO say it is not an aircraft.

WSVN-TV Miami is picking up the Channel 2 (KTVU) feed - Tom, it appears to be in the residential hills west of I-280, just south of the I-280/I-380 intersection - is that anywhere near correct?

Reports are ruptured gas line - emergency shelter 650 616-7180, at San Bruno Rec. center. Also reports that people are/were gathering at Tanfran (shopping center) to unite with family, etc. REally sad and bad situation with no warning.
Just announced on TV that operations at sfo are not being affected

Reason: no info
The massive fireball - reportedly from a 24" gas main line, is now gone.
But homes - up to 45, and wildland are on fire or now completely destroyed.
Regional mutual aid, Red Cross, off duty medical personnel are enroute or on scene. One good story that will hopefully come out of this will be the massive and quick response by San Francisco Bay Area emergency personnel.
Just after sunset, the air tankers and helicopter water drops from Cal-Fire were discontinued due to the darkness.
Several injuries being reported, including burn victims being transferred up to San Francisco.
There are problems either with water or water pressure hampering efforts. Multiple requests for water tinders are coming in as of 8:30PM Pacific time.
SFO initially had smoke blowing into the airport area, but there are no current disruptions.
Initial reports had this as a plane crash, but FAA dismissed this - all airplanes accounted for.
Did any Fter take off or land at SFO and see the fire/smoke from the plane? I wonder if you could see the fire far out into the Pacific on a 747. About how many miles out would one be able to see the flames?
I know that many flights going to Hawaii and out over the Pacific fly over San Bruno Mountain. The fire is just off the 280 so I'm wondering if traffic is affected.

when i first saw it on the news, it looked like the scene of a plane crash and when later reported that it was a high pressure gas line which "backfired/backwashed" into the homes where all it took was one to set off everything, i could only think of the people. it's sad that there is a loss of life but considering it happened at around dinner time (6:15pm approx), it's a miracle that more were not killed.
my thoughts and prayers go out to all affected.
