Solo dining in San Francisco (near the Fairmont Hotel)?

My wife is headed to a conference next week in SF and staying at the Fairmont. She will be eating alone every night (I hope) and is looking for good dining options within walking distance...any suggestions?

She could exit the Fairmont, ride the California Street cable car heading downhill to the east (about 5-6 blocks) to Aqua and Tadich Grill, two good seafood options.

The 'challenge' is that the Fairmont is at the crest of Nob Hill, therefore, there are few non-hotel dining options immediately adjacent to the hotel (she may want to consider The Big Four, in the Huntingtion Hotel, a long (but flat) block from the Fairmont).

Canteen would be good, too. She will need reservations.

Thanks for all the great suggestions so far! We've eaten at Aqua and LOVED it...that's a great suggestion!

Neither of us are very familiar with SF as we've only been there once...how easy is it to get to the russian hill area(1234 hyde st...I think it's called russian hill) from the Fairmont? We both really like "sushi groove"...according to yahoo maps, it looks close, but is it a safe walk?

I've had great solo dining experiences at One Market, Perbacco and at MarketBar in the Ferry Terminal.

it's not too far but it is hilly

for a cab ride or cable car ride not bad at all.
I like 1550 Hyde for something a little fancier - its small, but single diners are welcome. there are a lot of nice dining options right around there and it's a safe area to walk so she might just get to the area and look around..

I lived in SF long enough to say that an unaccompanied lady is very very low on the list of "out of the ordinary" things you'd see there.
That being said, I think she could go to any good restaurant and feel comfortable. I just wouldn't recommend places that have more of a night club atmosphere (like Asia de Cuba, for example).

A couple places in SF I've enjoyed alone..

I've enjoyed these places alone and not felt too weird...

MarketBar (already mentioned)
Slanted Door (bar area) - always tough to get two bar seats here but snagging one isn't so bad.
Bar Crudo
ThirstyBear
