Am I missing something? I end up getting maybe 1 SB (normally the 2nd or 3rd search) in about 30 searches. Based on the cost of the prices I'd have to spend all day searching for quite some time to get a baseball cap. Are their better ways to earn points?

Luck. Get 20 for a search instead of 1, that increases your earning power 20-fold.
Seriously, it seems that you shouldn't waste too much time on this. Just use the search engine instead of google and it seems to give you 1 to 3 SB per day just for doing what you would do on google. After a bit, you'll be able to get a couple of gift certificates for doing nothing "extra".
