The 2009 (for the 2008 Tax Year) Tax Software Discounts Thread

'Tis the (tax) season and it's the most wonderful time of the (tax) year.

Last year's thread helped me buy TurboTax at Costco at a nice discount. To get things rolling this year, for someone with a simple return, here is a link to prepare a Federal 1040 using TT online for free.

Office Depot seems to have a sale starting Sunday with tons of free software with any tax software.

Bought from Costco last year as well. It was a great price. Not sure of the Costco price this year but they did just mail out a $10 off coupon in the Jan 5-25 coupon book.

Turbo Tax

If you have a Fidelity or Vanguard account, you can get a discounted or free version of Turbo Tax, depending on the complexity.
The simple version is free and includes state and federal filing.

I used it last year and it worked fine.

The prices on Costco's website are
$79.99 Home & Business Federal+State
$72.99 Premier Federal+State
$49.99 Deluxe Federal+State
$41.99 Deluxe Federal only

All include five Federal E-Filings. State E-Filing is extra.

It appears that anyone may use the Fidelity site by checking the "visitor entry" box. But it seems to me that Costco's prices are best if you have to file a state return (you would need to mail it.) Does Costco's deal seem best?

Until this year, you could use the online version of TurboTax (up to Deluxe) for free if you were a State Farm Insurance policy holder.

This year, it appears that they are only offering it for their banking members, which is disappointing. However, they appear to be offering 25% off on TurboTax products for almost anyone.

Is this for Turbo Tax? (Don't forget that there are other products out there, such as TaxCut, so it's important to specify what product you mean.)

It would be helpful if specific URL links were provided. Yes, I know how to get to costco.com and other sites. However, links to specific web pages detailing price info would be helpful. (I do this whenever posting, if relevant, and expect others to do the same.)

I just threw away the promotional CD that H&R Block Tax Cut sends me. They sent me one last year. But before throwing it away, look inside the box for a $10 off coupon good for purchasing the e-file versions or the Home + Business versions of the program at Amazon, Best Buy, Circuit City, Target, Office Depot or Staples between 11/28/08 to 4/15/09.

I usually wait to buy the software in late March, when the price drops.

Turbotax sent me a similar CD that outoftown mentioned... has a $10 off coupon. You need the original coupon to get credit, but it is good for downloaded software.

FYI, the reviews on Amazon, et al, are incorrect. Due to (un)popular demand, Intuit increased the number of allowed returns to 5 (from 1 on software release).

I usually use TaxCut basic (no state taxes here, and the basic version seems good enough). Walmart usually has it for $5 cheaper than other places, and this year seems no exception.

$14.88 at Walmart (link), vs $19.99 at Officemax.com.

Any reasons to use the more expensive TurboTax instead of TaxCut ?

TaxCut seems to have better ratings than TurboTax on amazon

Sorry, yes, it's TurboTax -- I was replying to a previous post.

Costco's TurboTax page.

Note that if you buy it online you'll be hit for shipping -- $10.67 in my case, so you're better off buying it at your local store. They charge sales tax for online purchases, so you don't evade that.
