The most probable outcome is that you will be denied boarding onto your inbound flight to Russia. If you get to SVO, you will not be allowed through the passport control (as you don't have a visa and I assume you need one), so you'll be detained and put on a flight back to where you arrived from.

You can get a rush transit visa from a Russian Consulate for $250 if you are near a consulate. It takes three business days.
Cheers
Howie
Ps. The above assumes you're an American.

However, the Russian consulates in the USA tend to take holidays (based on holidays on the USA and Russian calendars) without advance announcement. Some of them could suddenly decide to close for most of the rest of this month.

Question was: "what will happen in Russia?"

Answer: nothing... the airline will not give you boarding passes.

It depends... If you have a round-trip ticket and they can put you on the same carrier, then probably not.

Where in NY are you? If you're not near NYC You can also use an expeditor like these guys http://www.passportcenter.net/visa_russia_tourist.php
Will cost you an extra $129 on top of the $289 visa fee.
Cheers
Howie

hmm, that information is not in OP - not sure now what the sequence is and from/where you are going.

anyway your choices are two:
change ticket
try to get visa in a consulate wherever you are going between 5th and 15th.
