'World Youth Day', July 15-20 2008 SYDNEY: Index of information [R. Catholic Church]

I could not find this major Religious travel even in the forum, so here are a few links for anyone interested in either the event as news or to attend (or if you know anyone coming out for it).

I hope this is helpful. Maybe FT will be used by some Religious Travelers to Sydney in June-July.

Unless a last-minute grabaseat to SYD pops up I doubt I'll go because it's the first week back of lectures.

That said BiziBB every World Youth Day has ended up having a lot more people turn up than anticipated - it's not like every pilgrim will have registered...

A reason to reigster:

Anyone considering coming, it would be sensible to register, per the exclusive-access rights for most of the time at Baranagroo:
Quote:
Sydney foreshore 'pilgrims-only' for WYD [SMH]
[snip]
The NSW government's WYD spokeswoman Kristina Keneally said the Barangaroo site, near Darling Harbour, would become a "mini-city" for more than 140,000 young people at any one time.

It will play host to a mass and other events over four days of the six-day Catholic event.

"A large part of this area is bounded by water, so for safety reasons we do need to have fencing around that portion," Ms Keneally told reporters at the site.

"At times, Barangaroo will be a pilgrim-only venue, because of the need to give pilgrims, who have come to World Youth Day, primary access to things like the papal arrival and the stations of the cross."

Pilgrims registered for WYD would receive a "pilgrim pass" to wear around their necks, she said.

"It is their ticket, if you will, for pilgrim-only events," Ms Keneally said.
[/snip]
PS. I hate lanyards, too.

Pilgrims' Progress for WYD08; Warning: 'Super Thursday' July 17 is the biggest day

Quote:
Pope will float on water in harbour city [SMH]
THE Catholic Church says it is close to achieving its pilgrims target for World Youth Day with 197,000 local and overseas Catholic youth headed for Sydney.

After initially refusing to publish a tally of pilgrim numbers, the church relented last night, reporting that by noon yesterday 132,671 pilgrims had completed their registration by providing organisers with their details.

Another 64,181 had partially completed their registration.
...With three weeks to go, the church said local pilgrims had been slower to respond but its estimate of 225,000 registrations could well be exceeded.
Quote:
The figures were made public along with details of the papal motorcade, which designated public vantage sites along Sydney Harbour for the boat-a-cade on Thursday, July 17, and his route through Sydney the same day.

The day of the papal welcome has been dubbed "super Thursday" for the disruptions it is expected to cause in the Sydney CBD as thousands of pilgrims join the city's 180,000 office workers.
In other news, condoms will be handed out to pilgrims in Sydney World Youth Day protest.

Freedom to protest like the example above won't be tolerated.

Quote:
Thou shalt not annoy on Youth Day [SMH]
EXTRAORDINARY new powers will allow police to arrest and fine people for "causing annoyance" to World Youth Day participants and permit partial strip searches at hundreds of Sydney sites, beginning today.

The laws, which operate until the end of July, have the potential to make a crime of wearing a T-shirt with a message on it, undertaking a Chaser-style stunt, handing out condoms at protests, riding a skateboard or even playing music, critics say.

Police and volunteers from the State Emergency Service and Rural Fire Service will be able to direct people to cease engaging in conduct that "causes annoyance or inconvenience to participants in a World Youth Day event".

These 'causing annoyance' laws have had a good run in the media but the Church spokesperson for WYD spoke in support of freedom of speech, provided the events are not obstructed.

Quote:
WYD organisers 'didn't ask for rules' [SMH]
World Youth Day organisers say they did not ask for extra powers to be handed to NSW police for this month's event in Sydney.

World Youth Day 2008 chief operating officer Danny Casey also said controversial "annoyance" laws that would be in force in NSW were not unique, and he supported free speech.
This follows the front page story today...
Quote:
Protests need our blessing, say police [SMH]
POLICE have told organisations planning to campaign during World Youth Day events they need to have placards, banners and T-shirts pre-approved or risk losing their protest "rights" - even those groups representing victims of sexual abuse by Catholic priests.

A few news stories today.

Most important is a rail strike on WYD08's busiest day.

Perhaps if you emailed the organizers?

Perhaps it's similar to a city's "Restaurant Week" being actually 5 days? Or a car rental's "weekend" rates starting on Thursday at 12:01pm even though it's not the weekend. Curious as to why this has you bothered?

I first asked the question out of curiosity since it seems a pretty stupid thing to call something that lasts six days as ".... Day".

Given the distance from the Vatican City, I don't think a one day itinerary was on the cards. Here are the events:
Quote:
WYD08 Events
The official World Youth Day program contains a week-long program of events.

Tuesday 15 July 2008
4.30pm-6.30pm Opening Mass celebrated by Cardinal George Pell at Barangaroo
Youth Festival events

Wednesday 16 July
9.00am-12.00pm Catechesis (teaching) sessions

Thursday 17 July 2008
9.00am-12.00pm Catechesis (teaching) sessions
2.45pm Papal Boat-a-cade on Sydney Harbour
3.30pm-4.30pm Papal Arrival at Barangaroo
4.30pm-5.30pm Papal Motorcade through Sydney CBD streets
Youth Festival events

Friday 18 July 2008
9.00am-12.00pm Catechesis (teaching) sessions
3.00-6.00pm Stations of the Cross - a re-enactment of the last moments of Jesus' life: St Mary's Cathedral, Barangaroo, Darling Harbour, Sydney Opera House Forecourt, Domain
Youth Festival events

Saturday 19 July 2008
From 5.30am Pilgrimage walk across the Sydney Harbour Bridge to Randwick Racecourse
7.00pm-9.00pm Evening Vigil with the Pope and sleep out under the stars

Sunday 20 July 2008
9am, Papal flyover and motorcade through Southern Cross Precinct
10am, Final Mass celebrated by the Pope
Based on the bolded events, I would pick Friday as the 'day' but YMMV.

Thumbs up Strike cancelled

Quote:
World Youth Day rail strike cancelled [SMH]
NSW rail workers have called off plans to hold a 24-hour strike right in the middle of World Youth Day.
As expected. The managers of the railway operator caved on some parts of the wage negotiations and the union was pulled in by their higher-ups in the union movement.
