I booked a flight DOH-BKK in economy and used qcredits to upgrade from Y to J. On the day of the flight I saw that the F cabin was almost empty so I asked at the airport if I could upgrade to F. I was open to how this could be done: cash or miles and my decision would be depedent on how many miles I would have to use versus how much cash they wanted. I was told it was not possible given that I already upgraded from Y to J.
I am assuming this is correct, but I thought it was a bit strange to have a passenger willing to pay money to upgrade and the rules are such that he cannot do so. To fly in F on that day, I would have had to purchase a completely new ticket and forego the rest of my itinerary which is quite a bit to ask.
Would it not be in QR's best interest to allow people to pay to upgrade when they want to do so? It would essentially mean that I am changing my Y ticket to a J ticket, and that I am using my qcredits to upgrade from J to F rather than from Y to J. Or just give me back the qcredits and ask me to pay for the upgrade from Y to F based on the fare difference?
I was a bit disappointed by the lack of flexibility. Not the end of the world, but a bit surprising experience.

Also, if the F cabin was empty, maybe the decision had already been taken in terms of crew levels, and for catering not to load any allowance for outbound F catering. If the F cabin were already occupied, adding one more passenger probably wouldn't matter, but opening the F cabin is probably a different issue.

bertheike from the information available to me QRs thinking is that the higher Economy ticketing classes are so much more expensive than the lower ticketing classes that an airport upgrade for cash is an economic proposition and cheaper than an E-mail upgrade offer. The upgrade price very much depends upon the true loading of the J cabin as well as the price paid for the original ticket.
If loading is very low then airport cash upgrades are cheaper then if the cabin is almost full.
Please remember that the seat maps that you can see only show the selected seats not the actual purchased seats. If a passenger purchase a ticket for a flight it is only if he selects a seat that he appears on the seat map.

For us the airport upgrading ( by faredifference ) is not that practcable for some reason.
***update !!! now 1 seat in C is gone. So the cabin should be open.

bertheike what I am saying is that those who do not reserve a seat do not appear on the seat maps in the reservations systems since QR allocates no seat to them. In fact they would only appear on the flight seat map when they check-in and select or are allocated a seat. The Amadeus software Check My Trip does not show then either!
In this case having access to the Amadeus data is not a guarantee that the information is correct. I do not know the capabilities of the Amadeus system you are describing so I cannot with certainty say if it is a true picture of cabin loading or not.

bertheike what I am saying is that those who do not reserve a seat do not appear on the seat maps in the reservations systems since QR allocates no seat to them. In fact they would only appear on the flight seat map when they check-in and select or are allocated a seat. The Amadeus software Check My Trip does not show then either!
In this case having access to the Amadeus data is not a guarantee that the information is correct. I do not know the capabilities of the Amadeus system you are describing so I cannot with certainty say if it is a true picture of cabin loading or not.

Pretty adjacent on QR27 a week earlier
Smiled and walked away. Only paid Ł450 HKG to MAN return and as OWE can live with 7 hours in Y - on what looks to be a very empty cabin - rather than that implausible offer.

From this info (or elsewhere) has anyone figured out which fare classes seem to get the SUOs and which definitely don't ? For both economy and business ?

Quite a lot given that Y is the highest booking class in Economy. So I guess they also consider how much you originally paid for your ticket

Although I'm not an expert in such matters, I know that BA operate a similar policy, you cannot normally upgrade an upgrade, so it doesn't surprise me that QR are similar.
Also, if the F cabin was empty, maybe the decision had already been taken in terms of crew levels, and for catering not to load any allowance for outbound F catering. If the F cabin were already occupied, adding one more passenger probably wouldn't matter, but opening the F cabin is probably a different issue.

I thought it was more the case that upgrades get allocated into another fare bucket, and tickets in that fare bucket cannot be upgraded further. And this is probably more by design rather than accident.

All reward flights and upgrades are placed in s single ticket class (U if i remember correctly). This class is not upgradeable, just as T, O, W and G cannot be upgraded.
Since e-mail upgrade offers are not upgradeable it is likely they have the same ticket class.
It appears that QR have made a decision that these tickets are not upgradeable. The reason for this is almost certainly Commercial but there could also be considerable technical reasons as well. Whatever the reason all we can do is accept that they cannot be upgraded.

Can anyone speak to upgrading a Class T economy fare?
Per the wiki, it is obviously not that common (I see just 3 mentions, 1 ATH & 2 SIN). As far as I know, T is one of the cheapest economy fare classes so I am not surprised, just wondering if anyone knows any specifics about the chances.
Am flying ATL-DOH-KUL in October. Assuming I just have to wait and see if I get emailed with an offer in the days prior to departure.
