One World Emerald Pre-Assign Seat?

Hello,

I have searched this forum and the Qantas website but cannot find a definitive answer to my question:

As a BA Gold (oneworld Emerald), can I pre-assign a seat on a Qantas flight at the time of booking (made via the ba.com website)?

I am UK based and looking to book SIN>ADL>SIN (QF 81/82) in Y for May 2009. As the booking would be in Y, the pre-assignment of a decent seat is all the more important. I have seen a few threads mentioning that QF only allow QF frequent flyers to pre-assign exit row seats (there appears to be no other "decent" seat in Y on the A330-300 that plies the SIN>ADL route). I would be very grateful for any advice.

Many Thanks,

Work-Shy

If I read your question correctly, I'm not sure even if you book your Qantas flight on ba.com that you'll be able to select your seat through MMB.

I do know that once the booking is made you'll be able to request a seat by calling Qantas in the UK. I'm QF Gold (OW Sapphire), and the call centre has always been able to allocate seats for me in advance. Note though that there is a percentage of allocation allowed, and once this has been met they stop pre-assignment.

As to seating on QF's A330-300, I recently flew HKG-SYD return. Outbound in 23A (bulkhead) and return in 24K. I'm about 6'2" and was much more comfortable in 24K than in the bulkhead, for what it's worth.

Hope this helps.

QF only allows QF Platinum or Chairman's Lounge members to pre-select exit row seats. As a BA Gold member you can pre-select from other seats

.. and dare I add - not even QF plats appear to get them all that often. I just finished my SIN-MEL-SYD-PER-SIN sectors - of the 4 exit row seats promised by the call centre I got .. precisely none!.. I did manage to get a bulkhead on one sector though - the other 3 were just standard aisles.

This is a serious weakness with the Qantas setup IMHO .. from now until the new seat allocation system is rolled out i'm taking the BA codeshare flight wherever possible!

Did you check on Qantas website what seats you were assigned a few days after you put your request in? Sometimes it doesn't come through but if you request it again some time later, it comes through. I'm not sure why but it does.

I can't always get exit row seats as a WP either, although I have been doing quite well recently.

I wouldn't call it a 'weakness in the system' personally, because I guess if other WPs and CLs have already grabbed them, then it's too late, that seems to be the only reason I miss out. Fair enough, first come first served within the same rank.

Also exit row window seats on many types are no good (doors sticking out) and middle seats aren't great, so I guess that just leaves you fighting for the exit aisle.

How did you request these exit seats? With a note in the Booking or actual pre-allocation?

For a start, you can only have preferences registered for your MEL-SYD and SYD-PER segments. However SIN-MEL and PER-SIN can be pre-allocated.

This is what you needed to do as a QF WP:
  • Call Qantas premium and ask for a request for an aisle exit row seat pre allocation be submitted for the international segments. This will be normally granted in a few business hours and will become apparent on www.checkmytrip.com and/or www.qantas.com/yourbooking.
  • For Domestic flights, call Qantas to get a 'note' put into your booking to request for exit row. For check-in, get to the airport very early; be there when check-in opens and request one if not already preallocated.

If you have booked via ba.com, then presumably you have booked on BA codes (even if the flights are operated by QF).

You should be able to use the ba.com MMB function to get seats pre-allocated. That should certainly be your first port of call. Call QF if you don't have any luck that way.

I probably do not fly international as often as some people here but I have always been allocated an exit row seat within a couple of hours of requesting exit row from the QF call centre....
