Firstly apologies if this is the wrong forum but having done a search on Jetstar and it seemed the most relevant.
I am trying to plan a trip from Singapore to Cairns and unfortunately following the demise of the excellent "Australian" direct flights to Cairns a few years ago it now seems JQ are the best of a fairly expensive and mediocre bunch of options..
Problem is that I am 6ft 5" and the thought of an overnight flight crammed into one of JQ's 30" pitch seats is unbearable (both for me and the person in front who has my knees digging into their spine.) to the extent that i would rather not go at all if I cant get an exit row seat.
This I am quite happy to pay for (as per the JQ website preffered seating option) but after relentlessly plugging in my available dates these are simply never available. Until it dawned on me to try a Jetflex fare booking and voila, completely open availability. So clearly these are held back for the Jetflex customers. But unfortunately at 4x the price, an extra $750 each way for an extra 7" legroom doesnt really appeal.. I presume as the date gets nearer and they dont have 12 punters paying the exorbitant Jetflex fare they must eventually release the exit rows as paid upgrades for regular fare tickets.
My question is firstly anybody have any idea how close to departure date this is.? Also how popular these are... ie, are they snapped up instantly or would checking maybe every 2 or 3 days mean i should be able to snag one..
Didnt think of calling the service centre. Just assumed they would have the same availability as booking online but will give them a call and see if they can help.
Yes, there is a problem with this. I just checked JQ58 SIN-DRW-CNS and could not select any exit seats. This was SGD441 o/w jetsaver.
I then checked the Same JQ58 for SIN-DRW, then JQ58 DRW-CNS and could select the same six exit row seats on each flight. The fares were SGD221 and AUD159 (Thats either SGD383 or AUD377 if added).
So you could do it easily on separate bookings. Of course you would need to pay SGD80 and AUD30 o/w for the exit leg room seats doing this.
As far as I understand, the ability to purchase exit row seats is separate from the ability to choose exit seats free of charge on a jetflex fare.lme ff
That is my understanding. I regularly purchase a jetflex fare domestically and I have access to all the exit rows when I go into manage my bookings as part of the fare. My understanding is that this is due to the fare structure rather than a Qantas FF status
I may be drawing a long bow, but I would assume this would also be the case on international Jetstar routes as well.

It is the same. The issue apperas to be that you cannot purchase an exit row seat online if it is a multi-sector flight. Single sector seems to be fine.
WOOHOO... Just a quick update to say all booked and ticketed... :-)
Many thanks to the previous posters for your helpful replies and as you surmised it seems to be the multi-sector that caused the problem. In particular, thank you serfty for pointing out the savings to be had by booking the legs seperately. (I know as a flyrtalk lurker for a few years thats obvioulsy something I should have checked first.. hang my head in shame..!) Anyway at $140/pax saved and 3 of us going that is my car hire paid for too.!
