I Really Don't Like Qantas

Three RTW First e-tickets issued on Qantas and there is no way to get seat assignments for domestic sectors. You can't check-in on-line because of the international sectors and there they will not assign seats if you call them. There are very few airlines that provide so little for so much.

QF Domestic only allocates 24hrs out. Most passengers of status (myself included) who tend to book dom fares at late notice prefer it that way.

I have no problem with the 24 hours. My problem is that there is no way to obtain a seat assignment.

There are changes afoot, and some of these things may go away:

Quote:
Qantas Executive General Manager, Mr John Borghetti, said the new check-in options included:
- online check-in for international customers, building on the successful domestic online check-in options already available;
- the option for customers to select their seat from the point of booking, for both domestic and international flights;
- the option for customers who have not made their booking online to select their seat via the 'Manage Your Booking' service on qantas.com; and
- the ability for customers who select their seat online before departure to be automatically checked-in and have a 2D barcode sent to their mobile phone, portable device or PC.

I trust that BA and due to their seating policy they would also fit into this description.

Why? WIth the BA seating policy, the OP would have no issue pre-selecting seats for any BA flights, domestic or international?

I don't see that it is much of an issue given that a 1st class ticket would have business class domestically. If you have your preference of aisle or window in the booking, it is v likely that you will get it

BA still practices seating according to status, fare paid and so on. They also list passengers by points at one stage which i believe is still ongoing.

Seating on BA is by status only with the exception of full fare tickets who are also able to preassign.

Actually this is superior service by QF and works very well in practice. However it is different from AA. As an Emerald you'll have no problem getting your preference as long as your AA or BA numbers are in the booking for status. Note that you can have 2 FF numbers in a PNR (one for earning, the second for status). You also need to tell QF your preference (normally that is part of a QFF profile), choices are aisle/window forward/back and they really do get you the preferred quadrant most of the time. Even with an equipment change. The AA system is great for people with no status who book way ahead -- they pick off the best seats. QF is not good for them; instead QF gives preference to those with higher FF status. So you hate them -- without having flown them.

I booked several domestic and international flights last year on American. American like most other airlines (I think) assigned seats automatically. After booking you can go see your assigned seats for your flight and other seats available. If necessary, then you can make necessary changes.

Booking my flight on Qantas the website assigned the two seats automatically. I then had to call the Qantas office in Phoenix and asked the representative for a better location on the aircraft.
BTW: I like Qantas, but I also like Boeing and would never fly the A380.

.... unless OLCI isn't working, in which case it's useless. If you have two people flying together but in different PNRs and OLCI works for one of them but not the other, calling QF to get a seat assignment for the second person is a waste of time, as they cannot assign you a seat. Some system. Generally, I've never had reason to complain about QF seating but their system is not without its issues. Telling a oneworld emerald "you'll just have to get a seat assignment at the airport" is a long way from "superior service".

Actually that is untrue. The system assigns you a seat based on your ranking and preference at 24 hours. All OLCI is doing is showing you the seat that has been reserved by the system at 24 hours and giving you the opportunity to change it. A quickcheck machine will do the exact same thing but depending on status will give you more options closer to departure than OLCI. I actually prefer a quickcheck machine at 30 min prior to departure when you have status as QF blocks prime seats which are released prior to departure. The agents in the J lounge can also look at this for you.

Regardless QF currently allocates to its own FF tiers before OW tiers. This is a policy set as I have been told by BA as part of the JSA which QF is following. This means it is unlikely a BA or AA FF would get preallocated row 1 anyway. However I am yet to experience a bad J seat on a domestic flight on QF.

If travelling with someone on a sep PNR you simply call QF and have the bookings linked, this will tell the system who will deal with it all the same. All QF res is doing when you call them about OLCI issues is taking your PNR and Surname and trying to OLCI for you. They cannot however complete OLCI on your behalf otherwise everyone running late for a flight would call QF res and have them OLCI for them.

There was a thread a few weeks ago when I explained the various reasons why OLCI wouldn't work, I am sure a search would yield the thread or post again.

In 2009 QF does plan to introduce allocated seating for dom at time of booking.

Just don't fly them. Book Tiger or Virgin instead.

I also like Boeing but why would you not fly on an A380? By the way, QF is the second largest A380 customer and the largest airline customer of Boeing 787s.
