I just saw this as well. This is indeed excellent value. Considering that a flexible Economy ticket is 52,274 points and the business is 22,176 points this is a good deal.
SYD to PER is another interesting example: 195,140 on 20 October for all the direct flights (J) but 47,472 when you connect in MEL.

Also tell me a car dealership which allows you to put the whole car on a credit card. The best I have got is BMW which allowed $25,000 on my AMEX or I was going to walk
I think Trivett is now a QFF partner and they just ran a promotion where you were getting extra QFF points when you purchased a car before 1st July.
THIS IS BAD KARMA - QANTAS I HOPE SOMETHING COMES ALONG AND SMASHES YOU TO THE POINT OF BANKRUPCY
Haha. LOL. OK I feel better now ;-)
Double the classic awards - I could have lived with that. But they are trying to get away with murder. The media hasn't touched this yet - I am hopeful QF gets a ripe BASHING when it does.
In all seriousness, I am glad I still have a truckload of Amex points that I can now safely transfer to Singapore Krisflyer. 150k SYD-LON return in business class with decent availability. Sounds good to me.
I kind of saw this coming, and have put virtually no miles to Qantas this year. In fact, come to think of it, I've not set foot in a Qantas or O/W plane this year. I have been putting all my miles into Star Alliance, where they are worth like 10 times.
The only problem is that I have 293k FF miles sitting my QF account which I have to use at some point...
At least there is no change in the # of points used for classic awards. I'll bide my time and cash out my remaining points over the next 18 months, and then plan on disassociating myself with QFF and Qantas.
A clarification please - are these examples (and the other ones listed here) Any Seat awards or Points Plus Pay awards ?
If they include all the fees and charges etc (the Points Plus Pay option) I can see QF being able to defend them (outrageous as they still may be), but if you have to pay taxes and the fuel fines on top of these millions of points then it really would be the greatest outrage in the history of frequent flyer progs.
Oh, and have I read it right that the Points Plus Pay option will only be available on Any Seat but not on Classic awards ?
All these include taxes & charges. For the cheapest red-e-deals it seems to come out very similarly priced to the Classic award (where taxes & charges are paid with points). But then it goes up very quickly.

A couple of smartly routed DONE4s, combined with partner hotel stays and car rentals - paid for on a partner card would get you well on the way.
Hell, from a DCIRC22 trip lasting 11 nights I recently racked up close to 100,000 points.
As for the car option, Trivett is one dealer offering full partner rewards - and I managed to buy my wife's Holden on Visa for around $32k. If a dealer jacks up at your preferred payment option, just take your business elsewhere.

Do you really think the 5M or so FF members are all chasing J SYD-JFK return? Get real.
They want SYD-OOL return in whYfor the family of four with a couple of weeks notice.

It is about double what it should be. You would expect to pay maybe 150% or 200% of the classic awards. Because QF classic awards already cost that much I would expect to pay about 200% including fees. What QF has done is quadrupling the points needed which is crazy.

Why is this "a joke"?
One way tickets are available under Classic Awards for flights when QANTAS doesn't think it can sell all the seats. So it gives a few away to FFlyers.
Same with booking a U-class RTW - yes - it's theoretically 280,000 points but actually getting seats can be *very difficult*.
But the 273,295 points you are quoting is to buy a regular seat - a seat that QANTAS probably thinks it can see for cash. Effectively you're getting about $0.01/point (so, about $2700 worth).
Now, I think the points required are, well, enormous.
BUT
I'm not surprised by this. If you have a limited resource you can either ration by price (charge what the market will bear) or ration by queue (what they were doing with Classic Awards - limit quantity).
So, now there are two option - you can opt for the limited quantity (but cheap) bucket. Or you can pay what the market will bear in terms of buying regular seats...
Checking about a dozen different options (some domestic, some international) it does seem it's /roughly/ about $0.01/point. A $400 seat will cost you about 40k points. And a $10k seat will cost you about 1,000,000 points.

So, from one trip, utilizing the knowledge available here (which most FFers won't) you have about 10% of the points needed to redeem a single one-way J class trip to the UK? :-)
Might take quite a few trips to get two return tickets then...

Most people don't use DONE4's
I wouldn't ever buy a Holden, but that's another subject
Its VERY hard to find a car dealer that will take credit cards for full payment on car, I had to fight to get BMW to take $25,000 on credit. The rest was a bank cheque

Whereas on other programs you can get anyseat awards for about 200-250k miles (and earn at a faster rate than with QFF also), doable with 1 or 2 RTWs.
