And the winner is ... VH-VYE

Looks like its a 737-800 that got the Commonwelath Games logo. May also be applied to others later, but for now its VH-VYE.

See here for some further info.

Yeah i knew that the 738 was getting the scheme but i heard VH-EBU was getting one too, anyway!

I once read how they painted Nalanji and Wunala Dreaming by making the Massive stencils. i was wondering, would they still have those stencils laying around? I mean, they would be pretty big and you wouldn't be able to just stick them in your cupboard!

The info about the stencils is here:

I doubt if they have been kept, but seeing they were created on computer they would still be available if QF wanted to paint another aircraft the same. Would be a costly exercise though - but what isn't costly when it comes to airlines and planes?

Environmental damage

What is costly is dragging an extra 4 tonnes of paint around the sky in terms of lost revenue for cargo, additional fuel burn when there is no cargo.

At least I understand why they put it on an ER now.

Yes true. It would also take some man hours to repaint. Wasnt Wunala painted in the USA as the photo David posted a while back shows?

I wonder if the delayed arrival of the A380s and Geoff Dixon's reference to covering the capacity shortfall by possibly delaying the retirement of other aircraft may help VH-EBU get back into the air???

Another thought - the 747-238 and 747-438 both used the same RB211-524D4 engines, so I wonder if the donks on VH-EBQ at the Longreach Museum might be possible sources of parts? Or have they already been stripped of any useful components? One has to wonder what happened to the engines from the other -200s and the SPs (also RB211-524D4 engines).

Thanks for those pics - talk about depressing Always wanted to ride on the SP but no luck. Always one of my favorites of the 747 family. Do any of QF's others live on with other carriers? I think I saw a photo of an SP (doubt it was QF's) that was converted for private use? That was a while ago - maybe operating somewhere in the middle east IIRC.

Wonder why QF didnt send an SP to Longreach (in lieu of the the 747 already there)? IIRC, weren't the SP's developed in part because QF needed the extra legs (special performance)? I would think that the SP would be a more historical a/c to QF than a "standard" 747 (I can't remember which series is at Longreach)?

Just a half thought while I'm parked in the PER QP waiting on the redeye to BNE.

So can someone please fill me in on the details of the SPs. What happened to them?

Look at the photos posted above! That pretty much sums up what happened to them. They are now beer cans or razor blades or some such utility item.

There might just be a 747SP for sale now: the former Lebanese PM had one as a private plane, and he is obviously not going to need it again.

AFAIK, the engines of VH-EBQ had been replace with 'time-expired' units and it had been stripped of all useful components (where they had been, I don't know) so no help to VH-EBU either.

Yeah, thats an interesting point. I guess the SP's were retired a while ago before the Museum has the money (?) in securing an dsiplay aircraft. I guess at that time (December 2002) they could only lay their hand on a retired B747-238B.

Won't help for EBU since QF wa sone of very few SP operators to use RR engines on them. That was one of the things that made the QF SP's a little unique and difficult to sell - along with the account practices that had them retain a book value significantly above their real value meaning they would have to take a book loss if they sold them any earlier than their retirement.

Yeah, I would have prefered to see an SP out there. But I suppose the 742 went since they were the first 747 type to enter service with Qantas and hence had the biggest impact on their operations. I guess only the 707 would rival that in terms of impact.
