Classic Rewards
I have been looking for a rewards flight and have a couple of questions. Does the options of flights change often and how far out is the best time to book to get the best flight options. There appears to be no emirates flights listed from Amsterdam to Melb in August 2018. Thanks for any help

The quick answer is to book as soon as you see acceptable flights available. Once they are gone it is possible that additional awards may not become available: particularly for non-status pax and/or premium seats. In your case you should search multi-city as AMS-DXB/DXB-MEL with flexible dates and the options will show up. Try AUG16/17 to test.

What class of award are you wanting?
Awards can be available from 355 days out.
First look for awards segment by segment. The long haul can be hardest to get.
Or AMS-LHR-(PER)-MEL, as by Aug 18 QF will be flying the B787 on the UK MEL route. The Melbourne-Perth-London Boeing 787 flights start March 24 2018.

Outbound AMS-MEL and inbound MEL-AMS?
Finding 2 long haul premium awards is 3 times as hard as 1.
Book what you can find one way now. If you do not, others will. No advantages in booking returns.
As well as MEL, look at ADL, SYD, BNE
And a range of cities from/to Eu.
If only looking for AMS-MEL you are restricting your options a lot.

It's also worth a look at awards to/from CDG and FRA including multi-city searches. You can search MH online and there are J options via KUL. There are 3J on EK from CDG-MEL on August 22/2018.

MEL-AMS can route via HKG (CX) or even SIN (BA via LHR) or NRT (JL) ... lots of Oneworld options. Don't stick to QF routing, it sells out soonest
