One of my favourite rewards (with little points required) is the Air Calin flight between Brisbane and Noumea. It only requires 24,000 points and taxes are $200. I find it good value when sale prices for these flights are around $600. When flights are not on sale they can be over $1000.

Also unlike other classic award bookings you end up with a QF flight number even though it was an award booking on another carrier so you get the full 30kg baggage and lounge access.

Many thanks folks for all the very useful comments. As I obtain most of my points from my CCs, I now have to calculate whether I can obtain sufficient points from Amex alone. From the data provided, it seems that I would have to receive about 50-65% of existing points from Amex alone.

Please consider factoring in the sign up bonuses in your calculations (can be up to 120,000 points for Amex if you are a new Amex-issed Amex customer and 70,000 points for Citibank VISA).

You may already be aware that significantly with Amex you can purchase points (if needed) at AUD25 per 1,000 (a broadly similar rate to that offered by various US-based airlines) with the points then transferable to various airlines: a useful back up for a multi-airline frequent flyer strategy when you want to top up your points balance for an award!

You can also pay your Australian utility bills, and tax bills at 0.5 point per dollar earn...

Thanks for the advice re the ability to purchase Amex points Platy - at 4c/point, that seems good value. However, I can't pay all my bills with my Amex card, so even if I switch to using a different Amex card with higher fees, there remains the question of where to allocate points from my MasterCard. So I would end up with some points going to AA and some elsewhere, most likely still QFF. Still need to think about the implications of this...
