First time on QF8
Hello everyone! We are flying QF8 at the end of this month for the first time. Actually our first time in Australia. Our son had a question about the flight that I couldn't find the answer to. I know it leaves DFW at 10:30 PM and arrives into SYD at 6:30 AM. Our son wants to know if that means it is going to be dark outside the entire flight ? Thanks of helping me get an answer!

No you will get a few minutes of sunlight as you approach Sydney. The amount of pre Sydney sunlight will increase the closer you get to December but other than that the flight will be entirely in darkness. You will have plenty of opportunity to sleep and the entertainment should be good! If you arrive much earlier than the scheduled arrival time most likely you will land in darkness.

First time on QF8
Agreed. We fly that route yearly to visit my wife's family.
It will be dark the entire flight until about 2-3 hours prior to landing. Basically as they start to serve breakfast.
It is a great flight and Qantas has a great entertainment system. Even for those if us back in coach.
Enjoy your trip!

If the moon is near full, then there will be enough light outside to see a fair amount of detail - including clouds and the condition of the sea. Of course, this only is possible when the cabin lights are turned off.

Don't forget that you do miss/loose a day coming from the US to Au, you gain a day going the other way.
So, dep 22:30 pm, arr will be +1 at 6.30 am, not that immediate next morning.
When its 23.59 pm, you can set your watch for each time zone, or just ignore that, and know you have lost a 24 hour period in time!

Take a look at http://www.flightaware.com to see which direction the plane turns on way points, most of the time it follows the same path.
From NZ when I did it to see the sun on LA (first flight of the day), I always pick row J on the window.
With QF8 being either a 380/747, some others might also like the J rows, so it would be hard to pick it 100%, but try anyway to get row J.
Edit: row K, just checked on seat guru, K away from the wings.
They do say window shades are to be opened prior to landing, so about an hour before arr, have the window shades open.
Being able to see that first hint of that first sunlight rays, the greatest thing on earth.

Rows are numbered, with the letters indicating which seat in that particular row.
The J seats in J (business) are aisle seats, and in Y (economy) they are middle seats on the main deck and aisle on the upper deck.

Thanks again for all the help!
I do know that we leave on a Monday night and arrive Wednesday morning.
I might need to ask in a different forum, but I have a question about transport from the airport. We are staying at the holiday inn old Sydney near The Rocks. Should we take the train there or is there a better option? The train seems really expensive when you add in the airport fee. There will be three of us, each with a carry on and larger checked bag.
