Qantas Airways splits in two

From http://news.smh.com.au/breaking-news...522-1z25d.html :

Qantas Airways is splitting its international and domestic operations into two separate businesses from July.

Each of the two businesses will have its own chief executive, and will report its financial results separately, Qantas said on Tuesday.

God no.

Google "fml" site:flyertalk.com and you'll find references years old.

I'm merely the first one to use it in this thread. :)

Does this mean that the clever and respected current CEO of QF is going away?

Oh, look! Flying pigs...

Himeno May 21, 2012 7:38 pm

Does that mean that QFI won't be propping up JQ anymore?

Maybe this comes out of some of the comments made in the senate when debating the Qantas Sale Act Ammendment bill.

The name of the new CEO of JQ will take some getting used to.

Are we allowed to say this on FT?

I don't really get this move. Apart from giving more transparency to see how much QF International is losing, doesn't this increase inefficiencies in terms of duplication of costs? Or are they pretty much run separately anyway?

Is the reason for this to show to the unions how much International is losing and use it as a stick to show how dire their situation is and force them to make concessions?

Splitting dom & intl is some what similar to what Virgin have done

Back to the 70s when it was TAA / Australian Airlines as domestic and QANTAS as international.

And most of QF has always run separately short and long haul. Cabin crew don't interchange at all, most of the pilots don't, maintenance done separately, even some of the soft service amenities are different when they could be the same. So the only significance of this change is to executive pay and to financial transparency. It does nothing to fix the reasons that QF is not competitive with other airlines, or only flies to 1.5 cities in Europe :)
