New domestic A330-200 EBO

EBO had its first revenue service from SYD-PER on Sunday the 21st. The J cabin is different from the other 2 new A330s (EBM/N). The seats are narrower with a 2-3-2 config in 6 rows for a total of 42 seats. Also the IFE monitors are in the seatbacks rather that in the armrests.

So strange that after negative customer feedback that QF changed to a 2-2-2 configuration only for AJ to come along and return it to a JQ 2-3-2 configuration. Should we be surprised?

That looks like Y if you ask me. Is the plan for this plane to be used for SYD-MEL flying rather than trans con? Why would anyone pay for J to sit in a middle seat trans con just to have a slighter nicer meal and 7cm more seat pitch and 2cm more width? Would be cheaper and more comfortable to buy 2 Super Saver fares in Y.

It may as well be called Premium Economy ... or is that just around the corner? It would make QF domestic J and JQ StarClass one of the same.

I read somewhere that there is an intentional plan to make the A330's and the forthcoming 787's more readily convertible between the two airlines. (e.g. in the 787 domestic Y, and Jetstar will both use 3-3-3 layouts)

I imagine the EBP is going to come in the same config.

How does it compare to the 742 Dreamtime seating (which was in 2-4-2 config, wasn't it)? Interesting comparison of 763 with 5-across J and 332 with 7-across J (sure the A330 cabin is wider, but it is only about 10 cm).

I wouldn't pay cash or points to travel in that cabin over Y.

+1

When I first seen that photo without reading this thread I actually thought it was Y.

I do not know about the 747 Dreamtime seats, before my time in J, but the only time I flew SYD-PER was in Zone A 2-2-2 (where appropriate).
Domestic 767 is 2-2-2, and these seats look close to the Millenium product.
So what next for QF under AJ? The pathetic launch of the new domestic product could only be match by 2-3 on the 737

Interesting to see. QF introduces domestic Premium Economy and DJ is introducing domestic J.

No, they could go the LH way and just use the normal Y seats, block the middle seat and have a movable curtain between Y and J. This way they could swap A320s and 738s in no time between JQ and QF.

That explains why the seat selection on QF.com is 2-3-2 layout with 42 seats for my upcoming flight to SYD. Not sure I like the look of this cabin, looks very cramped.

Has anyone travelled in this cabin? How are the seats?

Are the seats any taller / more comfortable ??

I presume the monitors in seatback gives a couple of extra inches per seat so the overall width loss is not massive.

Does seem weird to have so many different configs running around - thought the 767s were bad enough.

Maybe some future differentiation between east coast triangle and med-haul (PER, AKL)?? although not on original SYD-PER routing, but then I don't think QFs scheduling is at its best with 6 A380s out.

Isn't this the case of most European carriers? BA's Club Europe is simply leather seats with the middle seat blocked. Had to do 5 hours from LGW to SSH and it was only tolerable because we were in the first row.

This new config makes MS' domestic product of 1980s First class international seats look far superior.

Don't give them any ideas. They're already part way there with the convertible 734s

Anyway, I think EBO might be one to avoid. 42J, 272Y - ouch.

The 742s were never 2-4-2, nor did they feature Dreamtime seats. At the end of their service with QF in early 2003, they carried the recliner seat from the generation previous in a 2-3-2 config in Zone B and 2-(2)-2 in Zone A. Seat pitch was pretty close to Dreamtime on the 744, however - somewhere in the 52" region. Believe it was a 48J config. Upper deck was 27Y from memory.

The 743s did feature the Dreamtime seats from 2005 in the nose and upstairs, but before '05 carried the same seat as the 742. Using these two zones the config was 50J on three frames and 52J on the remaining three.

Here's a link to the older generation mechanical recliner that was fitted in the 742 and 743 (photo is from 743 EBW).
