You have to PAY to join QF Frequent Flyer program
I Just recently relocated to Australia and had to start gathering miles all over. I was quite excited to belong to the Qantas Frequent Traveler Program but was SHOCKED that you actually had to PAY about 85 AUD to join their club.
I emailed them and tried to shortcut this joining fee with my One-world account that I had on British Airways...but no luck. I read through the terms a few times but could not really see WHY one had to PAY and then over and above paying then still be loyal to Qantas??
Can this be right? Or what am I missing?
I was VERY disappointed with this.
Then the other day in the supermarket I noticed that when you join one of the supermarkets reward programmes you get a FREE membership with the Qantas Frequent Flyer Program.
How chuffed was I. Just really strange way to get yourself settled but happy that I didn't pay the odd 85AUD at first glance.....
So anybody else that are new to Australia - don't pay the Qantas FF program joining fee...sign up at Woolworths Everyday rewards instead and save the 85 dollars!!!
Also look into Virgin Blue and Virgin Australia. While doing some planning for a potential trip in and around Australia I found their flights more frequent than Quantas and cheaper- about 10-15%.
Their reward program program seems almost better too.

Don't have to pay if you have an address outside Australia...

Indeed - VAustralia was at least 50% cheaper on a long haul economy class seat back to JNB...but unfortunately connects in MEL. QF goes direct and that has it's benefits but at a price premium of nearly 1000 AUD I think VAustralia is going to steal a lot of QF's customers.

Welcome to Australia, baffel147!
Until a year ago everyone had to pay to join QFF unless you lived overseas. So over time if you see people with older QFF cards you know that most probably they forked out the cash.
Only through Woolworth you can get the QFF membership free and this is currently a "promotion" so it might be time limited.
By the way, the same issues apply if you want to join the NZ program, which also charges you money.

There is no Virgin Australia. Do you mean V Australia? And the Virgin Group is definitely not the leader in flight frequency in Australia, maybe on routes to Christmas Island but that will be almost it.
Yes, DJ fares can be cheaper but often you will find that they are on par with QF if you include luggage or even food/drink.
Usually the price leader in Australia is TT and sometimes JQ. DJ would like to beat JQ prices but they have a much higher cost per seat kilometer so they struggle with this.

Thanks DownUnderFlyer...
Correct indeed, QF has 24 flights from SYD to BNE on a weekday while DJ has only 18. The interesting thing is the SMH's article in April that reported DJ ordered (or want to order) up to 105 new 737's......105 is ALOT of B737's. I know its over 5-6 years but 105 WOW I wonder where will they fly them to?

They sell of the older aircraft before they need high cost maintainence. DJ turnover of aircraft is high: keeps the fleet young

That's not terribly nice.
Anyway, as others have said, you can join with an address outside of Australia and/or look into AAdvantage or even keep earning on BA if you prefer. BA still offers some longhaul service to Australia from LHR/SIN/BKK.

You could not join QF via Woolworths for free 5 years ago, perhaps a little waking up is required for yourself, along with some manners please. Qantas have been charging for membership since its inception, since then there have been ways to join for free from time to time, for those not familiar with the program its does not hurt to get the odd reminder of those ways.
