I found JNB-LHR//AMS-JNB in Z for just GBP 751, avoiding the UK's heavy long distance APD and the routeing suits me fine.
Not keen on the 4 hour 734 JNB-NBO leg, I found an all 787 connection but it requires overnight at NBO. I've only stayed at city centre hotels in Nairobi, are there any recommendable NBO airport hotels? Thanks.

Just in case you were not otherwise aware, the airline is in financial trouble.

Sorry, you're absolutely right. Here is a more up to date article on their financial predicament - I knew I had stumbled across news of their plight earlier this week. I guess, being in that part of the world, they are likely to be bankrolled by the government but better to be aware and check your travel insurance coverage before you book just in case.

I don't know your flight times, but if it is during daylight, a window seat might be great over Tanzania. (My flight was at night so I missed views of Kilimanjaro)

Thanks for your advice.
Oh, yes! I quite agree.
But the flight is just after midnight, so a night flight, followed by 3 hours at NBO (JNB-NBO-LHR):
Just need to get The Boss's agreement before I book the 734.

Sorry to nitpick but:
Trust me it won't happen
that was very unlikely
If you get the B738 you'll get PTV, on the 737 it's only overhead screens, and even better at noon you'll get the B788
