Figured this was large enough to warrant its own thread.
Can do the JNB via HKG run ex-North America out of Vancouver (YVR) for a reasonable price. Very large EQM and EQD with moderate or no repositioning required.
Example with stopover in HKG:

LAX to SYD /AKL through HKG offers comparable MQM and cost.
And may be easier to position to. Also gets you on the fancy new A350

Both are essentially the same, 0.41 CPD. The only better PE OW offerings I have seen recently with easily accessible US based departure locations are MAD-JNB on BA/IB and HKG-MLE on CX. However, the Male flight is upgradable with miles to J, the AKL and JNB fares aren't. Originally Posted by 2manyredeyes

It's great to have so many destination options though!

CX flies one of their daily YVR-HKG flights with the new A350 too so you're not missing out. Originally Posted by 2manyredeyes

i cant check right now, how much is the addon for this fare for a stopover in HKG? I have to be there in the summer and might just tuck it on. Since a PE RT YVR-HKG is actually more expensive than that. Great find!

OP's example is just $15 more with a stopover.Originally Posted by Smiley90

Why isn't the AKL fare upgradeable? However, the Male flight is upgradable with miles to J, the AKL and JNB fares aren't.
On the subject of AKL fare deals...while not CX, I'm seeing a lot of dates with AA PE LAX-AKL non-stop for < $1,500 RT. Fall dates as low as $1,366.

from what I saw the CX flights were E fares, not W or R. The AA would only be 0.07 CPM but the great aspect would be the 15k e/w for an upgrade to J. Originally Posted by dukerau

The EQDs are poor though, which is the main reason why these CX flights are so valuable.

The HKG-MLE flies w Alternating 2 & 3 class (A330-300). On days when the two class plane flys, R fare gets you J seats.Originally Posted by Lavezzi

True I should have mentioned that the HKG-MLE leg books into I. The USA-HKG flight is in R.Originally Posted by Snuggs

The real beauty of positioning to JNB is that you can sandwich it with JNB to North America for a return trip.
Depending on your luck, I've seen JNB to YYZ in PE on CX for as low as $1600 USD. I think it's more often $1900 now, but still - 44,000 EQM and over $5,000 EQD for the price.

Yes. Seems to be a normal fare. It's a normal fare with a milage-run-worthy rate.
I can only think of JFK - AKL via HKG on Cathay in PE that would get substantially more EQM in one trip from North America for ~$2k.
