Per this post, you will need to clear immigration & customs and then reenter the secure area via the departure hall.

Just booked 4 Tickets
Just booked 4 Tix HKT to LHR for May 2 - and last leg May 7
Includes 5 day stop over in KUL (could have done a shorter one but want to see KUL)
The fare rules said must be booked before October 21 also non refundable but changeable for 2000thb
One way ticket priced at
50440 THB (1316 euro) for 2 adult and 43720 thb (1140 euro) for 2 child
Which is not a bad deal at all for lay flat to London including the nice long stopover

Booked HKT-KUL-LHR-KUL-HKT for travel in 2016
GCM shows HKT-KUL as 437 miles, KUL-LHR 6593 miles, total 7030 miles, or 14060 for round trip
1. If credited to BA
BA calculator shows I will earn 510 Avios and 40 tier points for HKT-KUL and 8196 miles and 160 tier points for KUL-LHR
Total for round trip 17412 Avios and 400 tier points
Enough tier points to earn BA Bronze ( 300 tier points) = OneWorld Ruby
2. If credited to AA
I will earn only 6556 plus 408 AA miles times 2 = 13928 AA miles
EQMs 20892, but I need 25000 AA EQM for AA Gold ( = OneWorld Ruby)
so no status earned with this flight at least
(Do I have upto 31 Dec 2016 to earn the remaining 4108 EQM to AA Gold?)
EQD 20% of 13928 = $ 2785 but not relevant for 2016, right?
So, better to credit to BA and at least get OneWorld Ruby ( which will be valid for all of 2017?) and 3482 more Avios too ( I use Avios for short hauls)
Sorry for the noob questions, but just trying to decide where best to credit.

To get Bronze (aka Ruby) on BAEC - you'll need 2 BA/IB metal flights (some codeshares count also) in addition to the 300 tier points.

I guess paid ones, right? I took a BA award redemption flight using Avios a few months ago, but I guess that won't count as a BA flight for status, right? Thanks

By my nic, I live in HKT. The new terminal is a nightmare as they don't have enough staff and equipment to facilitate reasonable processing times. Make sure to give yourself a lot of time at the new terminal.

Personally, I don't think Ruby status is really worth much. I'd say you need to aim for OWS minimum if you're looking at making it worthwhile, but that's a personal viewpoint.
For AA, the earning year is fixed at Jan-Dec. For BA EC, it is based on your date of joining? Therefore EC may be better or worse if you are looking at upgrading your status.
Also, do remember the min 4 flight requirement on AA for AAdvantage Gold. I believe you need similar for BA EC status.

It's easy to get status crediting to BA if you fly in the premium cabins. The 4 BA flight req. is the only pain point. However, the redemption rate are quite a fair bit worse compared to AA. So if you can do 4 BA flights, and are after status, use BA.
AA is removing the 4 AA flight requirement from 2017 onwards, in favour of PQD. Status is harder to achieve, but I think their redemption rate works out to be far better for me. Even after adjusting for their 100% RDM on many discount business fare. PLUS, if you get status eventually, they give status bonus miles to far more carriers compared to BA.
It's pretty much down to status vs redemption. For me, the only value of a FFP is redemption, hence AA.

If status is less important (I don't think Ruby is worth chasing), dfs's points on redemption are relevant for you.

Have you been through personally? Seen any options for airside transit (particularly on separate tickets)?
