FWIW -

Those in TPA...

You can drive to MIA and fly for $2887 (AC) or $324x (DL/AA/UA)

or

Fly coach/first to PHX on separate ticket ($4xx/$8xx) and hook up with the $1995 to NRT. (Still widely available.)

Was able to book the following itenerary. Any advice on how to win the TWOV discussion with Delta?

I am considering booking PHX - LAX - NRT returning NRT - LAX - PHX. Would it be possible to skip my last leg LAX - PHX without repercussions? I know this is possible on a domestic ticket but not sure how it works on an international connection. If possible, can I still check in luggage and just not re-check after customs at LAX? Thanks!

According to DL rules, no.
Reality, yes.

You wont have any problems.

Of course the bad news is that PHX is very hot in August, while Tokyo (or most of the rest of Japan) is very hot and humid at this time of the year.

But Tokyo is beautiful in the snow, especially with holiday decorations. The Imperial Palace looks stunning when it's blanketed in white. Unfortunately I have yet to see anyone ice skating on the "moat" so I assume no solid ice forms.

Thanks to TPACer for finding this. I'm taking a long weekend, leaving PHX on 8/31, returning 9/5. Two more 747 flights (SEA-NRT-SEA).
Positioning flights purchased with miles, 12,500 outbound but 20,000 for the return on Labor Day. If I spent the night in PHX I could have gotten it for 12,500 but had to pay or use hotel points for a room.
Also, seats on the positioning flights all booked into W aisles on booking.
