Real life experiences with the ban:

Official info from U.S. DHS.
Source: https://www.dhs.gov/news/2017/03/21/...rture-airports
The aviation security enhancements will include requiring that all personal electronic devices larger than a cell phone or smart phone be placed in checked baggage at 10 airports where flights are departing for the United States.

These enhancements apply to 10 specific airports. The affected overseas airports are: Queen Alia International Airport (AMM), Cairo International Airport (CAI), Ataturk International Airport (IST), King Abdul-Aziz International Airport (JED), King Khalid International Airport (RUH), Kuwait International Airport (KWI), Mohammed V Airport (CMN), Hamad International Airport (DOH), Dubai International Airport (DXB), and Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH).

There is no impact on domestic flights in the United States or flights departing the United States. Electronic devices will continue to be allowed on all flights originating in the United States.
Emirates passengers flying to US directly from Dubai:

Emirates customers travelling to the US via Dubai will be able to utilise their laptops and tablet devices on the first part of their journeys, and also during transit in Dubai. They must then declare and hand over their laptops, tablets, and other banned electronic devices to security staff at the gate just before boarding their US-bound flight. The devices will be carefully packed into boxes, loaded into the aircraft hold, and returned to the customer at their US destination. There will not be any charge for this service.

Passengers on US-bound flights starting their journeys in Dubai are encouraged to pack their electronic devices into their check-in luggage in the first instance, to avoid delays.

Customers should be aware that there will be a detailed search of all hand baggage on non-stop flights to the US from Dubai. They should therefore declare their devices before the search, or ensure their electronic devices are packed into their check-in luggage in the first instance.

It's for flights departing directly from the airports mentioned.

Dubai-Milan-JFK on EK will continue to allow all electronics unless and until the US changes the ban.

For JFK-Dubai on EK, the electronics rules are the same as for flying JFK-MXP on EK or otherwise -- the same rules as pre-ban.

I was called directly by QR for my flight departing DOH on 22 March that I would have to check my electronics. Maybe they postponed it, but I was told it would be in effect.

Would have been nice to know if they delayed it then I wouldn't have had to reroute away from DOH...

For those flying on Emirates, they have just announced a free service for passengers who will fly directly to US from Dubai:
Emirates customers travelling to the US via Dubai will be able to utilise their laptops and tablet devices on the first part of their journeys, and also during transit in Dubai. They must then declare and hand over their laptops, tablets, and other banned electronic devices to security staff at the gate just before boarding their US-bound flight. SNN is not in the UK.

KU117 has stopped in Shannon since June last year for "security reasons".

They will probably need to be gate checked and staff are likely to roam the boarding area to inspect hand luggage of passengers.
How does one gate check a laptop? Just put a luggage tag on it and throw it in the hold? How will it be protected from damage? Will the airlines provide some sort of container to put gate checked electronics into?

I can just see a lone laptop or iPad coming off the baggage belt dropping onto the carrousel. Anyone could grab it and steal it.

Will this make the flight exempt from the new electronics ban?

See my post above on how Emirates are planning to deal with it at the gates.

Oh, didn't see that before. How long will all this take? How many people will be lined up on the jetway waiting for baggage handlers to go into the hold and bring up all the small boxes to match them up with their owners? I would hope some one would be double-checking tickets to ensure people claim their own device-in-a-box. And what happens when someone says they never got theirs back because it was stolen by a baggage handler? This is going be a cluster.

There will likely to be some wrinkles to iron out at the start but, given that this ban is due to be in place for months/until further notice, I would expect them to hone the processes in due course. If people are not comfortable with the procedures as they are described, they have options. They may not like those options, but that is another matter.

Emirates' plan. They're trying to work within the guidelines.

Well considering March 22 has come and gone, I think you have figured out QR will implement on March 24.

Sitting in LAX now, just got off QR DOH-LAX, no ban on March 23. (Lounge in DOH said starting March 24.)

There's a battery in there--probably a CR2032 coin battery. It runs the clock and maintains the CMOS memory.

This sucks, wish I could have taken my original flight on the 22nd. Not the ideal situation for me to have rerouted, but in hindsight it was still worth it rather than the risk of checking my electronics.

Etihad has announced their policy too, effective March 25: http://www.arabianaerospace.aero/eti...d-flights.html
To avoid inconvenience, guests are encouraged to pack the prohibited items in their checked baggage prior to reaching the Preclearance facility in Abu Dhabi. Any prohibited electronic devices will have to be declared and placed in padded envelopes before being securely taken to the aircraft luggage hold by staff. Such items will be returned to guests on arrival in the US, while conveniently, other items of checked-in luggage can be collected at the final destination in the United States.

Guests are also encouraged to avoid carrying spare battery packs larger than the permitted size as these will not be allowed in either the luggage hold or the cabin.
