When is "red flag" removed for Customs violation?

I know this is a 5.5 year old thread, but am curious to know what happened to the OP or anyone else in this situation.

I had an apple in my bag, and was fined $500! Since then, (five trips and counting), I have gotten the X. They send me to secondary where it takes no more than 5-10 minutes for 1-2 questions and a bag xray. Actually quite easy, but it also means that you can't take advantage of things like Mobile Passport. Can anyone comment on how long it took to have the "red flag" removed? Is it based upon passage of calendar year time? or X number of entries made back into the U.S.? I know this is private CBP info, but surely someone on here has had this and can share their experience. Thanks!
