It's even easier these days, with people posting photos of their boarding passes (along with the 2D codes) on Social Media.

I've seen people on twitter ask AA for help with something, AA asked for booking ref. They send a photo of the boarding pass on a public feed.
I've replied to one of those once with "Thanks. I can now access and change your booking.
Don't post photos like that online."

I see racial profiling suggested here as if it's a sensible option. In Bruce Schneier's opinion it's not effective and research backs him on that. Links:

BTW, I have taken a photo of all my important documents to save on my iPhone.

Once a photo of my forgotten passport saved my flight.
