I wonder how often that would work in Southern CA airports, where I live? Although an even better way is just speak a language more exotic than Spanish in cases like that. Just learn "No Hablo Ingles" in Russian(Не Говорю По-Аиглийски/ Ne govoru po anglicki).

They play the name game at SNA. Played last week with the one-striper.

TSA: Sir, what is your last name?
Me: It's on my ID in your hand.
TSA: Sir, can you say your last name?
Me: Yes.
TSA: What is it?
Me: It on my ID.
TSA: Sir you need to say your name.
Me: No, I don't.
TSA: Thanks, have a nice flight.

My name is 'Brown' it's spelled S-M-I-T-H

I mention this because the correct pronounciation of my surname bears little relationship to what a English speaking person might surmise.
Don't even get me started: my name, although it is spelled by familiar-looking Latin letters (I suspect that's because the passport must contain those, my name actually has accents in it when typed correctly) is pronounced something widely different, it actually has a letter / sound (which, in writing, is written using two Latin letters) which simply does not exist in English (or most Indo-European languages, for that matter). I can't stop laughing as they try to pronounce it, usually trying to pronounce both letters separately, completely botching it up. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voiced_palatal_plosive this for more.
