Unhappy TSA: The 3-1-1 Rule

I fly often, but I never actually paid attention to this rule; the 3-1-1 rule.

I am planning to bring my 3.4oz cologne with me in my carry-on bag. I never had a 3.4oz sized cologne before; it has always been the 1.7oz ones. The rule, however, says it has to be less than 3 ounce that can be put in the carry on bag.

Do you think I can take my cologne with me in the carry on bag?

Anybody? Anybody?

"Do you really want to fly today?"

Seriously...here's the rule: http://www.tsa.gov/311/index.shtm

Can TSA really tell the difference between 3 and 3.4 oz? If it's over 3, they can tell you to dump it. In any event, you have to put it in your baggie. Those crack x-ray techs can spot liquid containers in a second.

Other countries have been leaning on TSA, and they've been forced to go metric:

It appears they now accept the international standard measures, which are:

100 milliliters per container
1 liter maximum bag volume
1 bag per person

So 3-1-1 should actually be 100-1-1 now. For the record, 100ml is 3.4oz, and 1 liter is slightly more than 1 quart.

Your cologne should be OK.

I believe they changed it from 3 oz to 3.4 oz so they would be the same size as the 100ml size the EU had.

~ 3.78 liters make a gallon.
4 quarts make a gallon.

1 quart = .94 liters
1 liter = 1.05 quarts

You might get it on; but there's always a TSA that likes to push the limits (reference Mom with sippy cup)...don't be heartbroken if they make you toss it..if it's expensive, I leave it home...'cause once you're at the security point, there's no way to put it in your check thru. Why not put it in checkthru to be safe??

I believe that the calculations you've done show that one liter is, indeed, more than one quart, given that it takes fewer of them to make one gallon.

Congratulations from Kip and the Fed Gang. You have successfully passed the TSA Screener's Employment Entrance Exam. Your knowledge of liquid measure will be a valuable asset to the Front Line in the Waw on Tewwow and Confiscation of Toothpaste. When can you start?
