Strike-anywhere matches can ignite on their own...just the friction of being josteled inside the guy's pack can set them off. That's why they're prohibited in checked luggage, too - potential for belly fires.

Indeed they can, but if spontaneous ignition were commonplace, I for one wouldn't have been carrying them in my back pocket for lo these many years. I was just wondering whether any particular mechanism jumped out.
