Duty Free into Canada
Hi we are an Aussie couple flying into LAX mid June. A few hours later we fly to Vancouver BC on a seperate ticket.
We have found out on past occasions the regulations about liquid quantities as carry on in USA, far stricter than Australia. Unsure about Canadian rules.
We of course have to change terminals to catch our Delta flight to Vancouver.
At this point after our bags are checked in for this flight is there, and are we allowed to purchase duty free alcohol and carry it on to the Canadian bound leg?
If not, we are guessing we could purchase at either Melbourne or when we land at LAX and then repack that in our checked luggage.
Many thanks

Please note that departures from the US to Canada are no different than to domestic US destinations - there are no customs or immigration exit controls in the US - so the procedures should be the same.

You may carry duty free liquids in secure, tamper–evident bags, more than 3.4 oz or 100 ml in your carry-on bag if:
- The duty free liquids were purchased internationally and you are travelling to the United States with a connecting flight.
- The liquids are packed in a transparent, secure, tamper-evident bag by the retailer and do not show signs of tampering when presented to TSA for screening.
- The original receipt for the liquids is present and the purchase was made within 48 hours.

Just a bit hazy on the flight LAX-VCR.....are you saying there is no exit customs/immigration procedures to Canada?
Once we clear USA customs/immigration from Melbourne and find our Delta terminal, is there a duty free shop prior to us boarding the flight to Canada?

BTW, the airport code for Vancouver, BC, is YVR.
P.S. If you purchase your duty free items in Australia or on board your flight to LAX, nothing will stop you from packing those in your checked luggage; the rules I quoted above are for carry on (hand) luggage.
P.P.S. I missed your timeline. You're traveling in June, by which time Delta would have moved from T5 and T6, where it currently operates, to T2 and T3. Those terminals also have DFS Duty Free shops.

I don't think it applies to you, but there have been a few reports of problems with opaque bottles - the scanner doesn't work with them. I would have thought they'd force the pax to open the bottle so they could use a test strip, but in the instances I read about, that wasn't an option - maybe not all stations have the strips.
I bought a jar of expensive hand lotion from the Harrod's store in Heathrow. The clerk packaged and sealed it up properly in the tamper proof bag with the receipt showing.
When I hit the pre-check line at LAX for my connecting flight, the lotion got alerted on and the screener said it wasn't "scannable" by the machine and refused to let me thru with it.
I tried in vain to argue but in the end I was forced to go back to the counter and check it. He escorted me out of the screening area carrying my duty free bag like it was radioactive or something.
It's been a long time since I've bought duty free and it will be even longer when I do it again. That incident still has me fuming mad

Duty free through Canada
Hi all, I cannot find the answer I'm looking for and hope someone can help me.
I am flying from London to DFW, but connecting in Toronto, do I need to check liquor bought in Heathrow duty free into my check in bag for the Toronto to Dallas flight or will I still be able to carry on?
All info I can find just says allowances, in sealed bag, etc. I have brought back carry on from london to dallas on direct flight, but have never connected in canada before.
thanks

CATSA - Duty-free Purchases
Duty-free Purchases as Carry-on Baggage
Since January 31, 2014, the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority accepts, subject to screening, duty-free liquids, aerosols and gels purchased from any airline or airport retailer that are properly sealed in official security bags and accompanied by an itemized receipt.
These do not count as part of your carry-on allowance.
Screening officers may open your security bag to screen its contents, then re-seal it after inspection.
You may be asked to surrender your duty-free purchases if:

I got denied at the TSA screening at LAX with my duty free purchased green tea spread that I purchased at ICN. Everything was securely packaged and labeled with "GEL" in the clear bag. However the TSA agent had to open the duty free bag and asked me to check it in. Very annoying.

You probably wouldn't need to reclear Security <redacted by moderator> on the second connection, so it wouldn't matter.

Duty-Free items on connection
Hi All,
I'm traveling from HND to JFK this weekend and then continuing on to PWM. The reservations are booked as separate tickets on ANA and DL respectively. I will be traveling with Duty-Free liquor items from Japan and was wondering if there was any way of getting them onto PWM without having to check a bag for that flight (which would incur a separate fee for me). Any suggestions or do I have to resort to putting the items in my checked luggage once I reach JFK?
