Couple questions about LAN

Hello All - Thanks in advance for any experience you can share with me.

I'm booking a trip on LAN going LAX-LIM-SCL on the 767 and then on the return we are on they're A340-300. All flights are in business.

I've tried to find some pictures of the old business class on the A340 but haven't been very successful. Does anyone have any pictures? Any reports you can give on the overall cabin experience on the semi-long haul flight lim-lax? I've searched flyertalk and airliners.net and haven't found much from recent flights.

Also - from my understanding, LAN has a VIP lounge at SCL, but do they have one also at LAX in TBIT? How does it compare to the AS Boardroom or the NWA World Club in general?

Thank you!

You could end up with an equipment swap, so just be prepared. Also, the A340s are undergoing reconfig now, so you could end up with new business. Airliners.net should have some old A340 interiors. I find the cabin pretty nice, the seats are comfortable, but not at a great sleep angle. There is plenty of pitch and recline, and all but one of the "old config" have a decent AVOD system.

The TBIT oneworld lounge is quite nice, and a tenfold improvement from the old pit. There is a respectable self-pour bar, with a couple of non-offensive wines, a buffet with hot/cold items that really blows AS or NW selections away, not that the food is very exciting. (depending on the time of day, mini pizzas, hot noodles, salad, soup, etc.) There is a wall full of computers for free use. There are showers should you have that "not so fresh" feeling during your stay there.

Thank you

Thanks for the responce! If my memory serves me right you have talked about what a deal going down there on LAN used to be in Business. I think it's still a reasonable deal at this point at 90K.

Thanks for the information and I'm going to keep searching for trip reports and pictures of the cabin. The new Primium Business looks great, just don't know about the old style.

This might be a non-issue completely because this trip isn't until November so many things may change between now and then with the airlines upgrades being installed. THanks again!

Airbus 430? Must be ultra-new aircrafts. "A340" I think.

Fleet Upgrade?

So from what I can tell in other threads, most of the 767-300ER's are upgraded to the premium business, and from what others have said in this thread so far, it looks like they're working on upgrading the A340's removing the First and Old Business Class and then upgrading it to the Premium Business, and possibly even Premium Economy and then Economy. Is that a correct understanding? Thank You.

Generally, yes. A few caveats:
(1) There is still a stray 767. Just one. It has no old F, it is all Old J, and has no AVOD, and they hand out crappy DVD players, and you can barely hear the sound.
(2) They are taking delivery of some "emergency" A340s due to the delay of the 787s. What condition they will arrive in, who knows. Hopefully they will go right into the reconfiguration bin. But the last A340 they took delivery of was a used craphole without the usual accoutrement of the Lan IFE system.

Eastbay1K - As you know I keep up pretty well with the AS forum, but I guess I need to start keeping up on the LAN info so I can have all this info in my knowledge store as well! Thanks again for the info! I really appreciate it.

I have heard sleeping on the new Premium Business is pretty easy... What would you say regarding sleeping on the old business class? On our current schedule, we are on 767's going LAX-LIM-SCL but on the return on A340's going SCL-LIM-LAX. The return is a red eye completely... comments?

Here is a photo of LAN A340 old business class. Very basic therefore you should not expect much. Also, the positie aspect of LAN is its new hard product (premium business) because LAN service and onboard food is below standard.

Currently the best business cabin and service between LAX and Latin America is Korean Air (KE) 3-class B772 which flies LAX-GRU nonstop.

Rgs,

I would disagree, sometimes. The wines are excellent for a business cabin. The service is variable, but tends to be way too rushed, and unless you ask, you don't get a pre-dinner beverage. I have had very good food, and so-so food. They also no longer have a license to serve alcohol on the ground @ LAX (I don't know about the other US ports).

I don't sleep well on planes, so even in NBC, I have problems, but I find putting the blanket UNDER me (I tend to get warm anyways) helps with the comfort.

Service was certainly not rushed on my recent SCL-AKL flight. It took well over 2 hours to do dinner (and I skipped dessert and cheeses).

Agree the wines are pretty good, at least the few I sampled were.

Thanks again everybody for the updates and comments on LAN service and product. I'm looking forward to trying it out even though I've read mixed reviews for it.

Just came back from a trip with several LAN flights.

GRU-EZE-LIM-CUZ-LIM-MIA

The GRU-EZE-LIM and LIM-MIA were all 767s with new J seats.

Here is the photo of the J cabin. I don't sleep well either in the plane but slept very well on this seat.

Having flown most OW carriers, I was very impressed with LAN for its J seat and service. I even place it on top of JAL which I flew from JFK-GRU.

Enjoy your flight.

Also slept very well in these seats, once the FA had managed to free up the seat mechanism - was told that they occasionally lock up and it takes a knowledgeable FA to know exactly which part of the seat mechanism to work on. May I recommend avoiding the front middle seats as the large information screen stays on for another hour after the lights are dimmed. The only downside was that in the upright position, the footrest doesn't extend sufficiently for non-height challenged folks.
