which one is better Aeromexico or Mexicana airline

I am arranging a trip to Mexico via US. Which airline is better from US to Mexico, Aeromexico or Mexicana Airline?

Aeromexico is member of Skyteam, while Mexicana Airline is not member of any airline alliance. which one is bigger in terms of the revenue and fleet size?

AM is better if you manage to fly with one of their B777 which has the new lie-flat business class fitted.

Tylorcl,
AM is part of Skyteam and MX is a flight partner of AA. In April 2009 MX will become a full member of OW.

Someone may want to merge this thread with the other thread (AM vs MX) on this subject.

Never flew with AM, but Mexicana IS definitely a decent airline: free booze, hot meals on most flights from the US to MEX (but not on flights from ORD/LAX to MEX deparing at about 2am - these are night flights, so only a sandwich, but booze is still for free). Also on most flights you will get free headphones and they will screen some movies (not on short MIA-CUN flights). If you do not speak Spanish, MX F/A`s normally speak very good English (otherwise practice your Spanish for free).

I definitely prefer Aeromexico.

I have flown Mexicana between Mexico City and Buenos Aires and it was terrible, even in Clase Ejecutiva.

Overall, Aeromexico is more consistent and uses nicer planes.

I would prefer Mexicana. Have been flying with Mexicana for twenty years. and have always had great service. flown with aeromexico like four times and dislike it. they have old planes and their service is bad from the ticket counter all the way to the plane. first class is hoorible on the older planes.so mexicana all the way. i am glad mexicana will be flying to europe

FWIW MX has recently launched a massive re-branding ahead of its entry into oneworld. Have not personally flown them since, but have heard good things from relatives.

Don't accumulate FF miles on AeroMexico. I transferred 80,000 miles from american express rewards to AeroMexico for 2 from Mexico City to Santiago. The miles transferred fine and space was available but I got socked with a $502 charge on each ticket. On questioning, it was explained that $76 was the taxes and the $400+ was a fuel surcharge. When I explained that petrol has fallen 66% in recent months the reply was that it fluctuates a lot. I'll pay the outrageous charge because I can move my mles back to AMEXP but I will not fly AeroMexico again and I may even get out of AMEXP rewards. FF miles are becoming useless.

Agreed; AeroMexico miles become useless, both domestic and on their international routes, once the fuel surcharge has been included.

Too bad you can't use LAN for that route as LAN does not have surcharges and have a great product.

I just finished a "field test" of both airlines flying them on domestic routes within Mexico:

MEX-VSA on AM in C
VSA-MID on AM in Y
CUN-MEX on MX in C

Bottom line: they are really very much on par and I can certainly recommend both. Both are clearly above average.

All three flights were ontime, service from checkin to baggage claim very efficient, lounge access for domestic C class, nice lounges, free drinks inflight including alcohol, free snacks or even meals on longer routes.

There are relatively minimal pros and cons for each of them:

Pros of AM: brand new Terminal 2 at MEX, quite a few brand new planes now (738s, E90s) - was lucky on my MEX-VSA leg with brand new E90. Cons AM: Some FA speak very little English but are ultra friendly if you speak Spanish to them

Pros of MX: wine (and not only beer/spirits like AM) inflight in C, better for interline connections in MEX as it is in old terminal 1 used by most international airlines, Cons of MX: FA rushed with C service then disappeared into Y and was not seen again for more than an hour ...

I'd fly any of them again.

I wonder if they are also upgrading their long haul C class - instead of just the livery?

Apparently yes, as this photo of their industry-standard pod seats attests:

Lightbulb What about Mexicana's Frecuenta Program?

I had asked this in another forum, with no feedback. Do they have a good program for someone traveling though Central and South America? I hear they are soon to join oneworld. If they do offer unlimited free upgrades (for silver, gold, & Infinite) on all their flights internationally, they would be a better option then the US airlines. This includes companion upgrades and a five day window for Infinite.

In addition, their award chart shows USA-Japan FC at 120,000 miles on JAL and FC USA-Korea 110,000 miles on Asiana. There is loung access for several different lounges including; American Airlines Admiral Club Lounges, Iberia VIP Lounges, and Lufthansa Executive Lounge at Frankfurt etc. including one intersting one, "Havana Airport Lounge de Ecaesa". The mexican site also shows that Infinite
