So in my above example I am flying on United in L, this earns only at the 50% level on EgyptAir. That 30,000 miles flown would then only get me half-way to silver in this instance if its the same for Status Miles and Redeemable miles. Makes it less advantageous as United for example still bases status on miles flown (yes there are spend requirements, but there are Credit Card way to get around that). I was really hoping status would be on pure miles flown, as a mileage run every two years is not a big deal.

You're right, if L only earns 50% on MS then you'll need to fly 60,000 actual miles to attain Silver status. That's why MS Plus is good if you're flying Business or First as these give 150%+ earning rate on most partner airlines.

Or if you are based in Europe, all SAS (even the discount Y fares) earn 100% on MS.
And these SAS fares ex-Europe to the US or Asia are dirt cheap

And when SAS allows for children to fly just for taxes, that can make for a really cheap way to rack up miles/points in MS program and even toward MS*G.

MS does seem to collect fuel surcharges on award tickets. A few hundred dollars in surcharge for a one-way first class long-haul award ticket can indeed be very expensive.

Does anyone have experience redeeming miles on other Star Alliance carriers? There are some really good sweet spots in the award chart.

Awart chart here (one ways are 50%): http://www.egyptairplus.com/MS_Membe...art_01_feb.pdf

First off, some regions are pretty liberally defined, e.g. Indonesia, Japan and Guam are all part of the same "Central (!) Asia & Far East" region. Meanwhile the "South East Asia" region stretches from Uzbekistan to places like Cocos Islands south of Indonesia. Some interesting intra-region routings there.

One sweet spot would be Central Asia & Far East to Hawaii which is 30k miles one way in J, or 20k in Y.

Lots of opportunities -- but have anyone actually made a Star Alliance redemption with this FFP?

OK, thanks - I see what you mean^

The other things you need to factor in are the "taxes" which apply, how multiple sectors are handled (e.g. if you can connect outside the region(s) of your award).

Any info on MS status maches 2Q2017

I might try MS (Egyptair) for a match request, anyone here done one recently and know the criteria for MS matches? (From my BA Gold, OWE)

Currently not flying SQ so will lose status soon (as no longer flying AMS/LHR - Asia rtn ), as now in Philippines and direct flights to KUL/BKK from MNL I use MH and TG , I enjoyed my 4x TG J MNL-BKK rtn flights

With CAI-UK a pain now, no laptops, cameras etc, it is easier (and cheaper) to fly MS direct to Cairo

nb
I already have 2x Egyptair International flights booked, SXF-CAI and CAI-AMS for May2017, to help meet any MS metal needed criteria?

Absolute waste of time ... Don't bother asking for MS Match
(I supplied both BAEC-Gold account info and MS flights booked for this May)

Response as below

Thanks for your e-mail.
Please be advised that your membership card level will be upgraded to
(Silver) when your account balance reaches 30,000 flown miles,

level will be upgraded to(Gold) when your account balance reaches 30,000
flown miles after being Silver

60k to hit MS-Gold is a terrible answer . I will now avoid either flying MS or depositing *A flights to MS FFP

I can understand you are disappointed there is no status match offered by Egyptair. But I wonder what made you believe there was one?

The reply to your post simply confirmed that you get to Gold in two 30K jumps, earning silver at the intermediate 30K stage.

That's not so bad.

If you simply want a cheap line to *A Gold, perhaps Aegean or Turkish is your best bet.

PS it's probably best if you remove the name from valediction to the email.

Going to try and redeem some miles for a Star Alliance award -- anyone know what the best way of doing this is? Is the Cairo call centre the only option?

EDIT: The outsourced EgyptAir office (a local travel agent) here in Hong Kong helped me book the award via email -- it was a very straightforward process, far easier than I had feared. 22,500 miles in Business from Tokyo to Singapore on ANA. Great value for a 7h+ flight in a long-haul configured Dreamliner.

best channel for cheap long-haul business class tickets?

What’s the best channel for purchasing MS long-haul business class tickets as cheap as possible (flexibility not needed)? Prices on the app seem to be consistently more expensive than what comes up on 3rd party websites through e.g. Momondo. Thx

Look at respective momondo for the country of origin of flights, so if starting from CDG , then look at momondo.fr
