Turns out it wasn't a Saturn Vue, I got the model names mixed up. It was some kind of Saturn car, I remember the code being ICAR, though I don't have the receipt on me. It may have been a Saturn Aura. Sorry about the confusion, I'm not very familiar with GM vehicles.

Aah, no worries. The Aura was classified as a Fullsize before, not sure what it is now. Doesn't make sense since it's almost the same car as the Pontiac G6 (same wheelbase, and only a couple inches longer). The G6 was a Midsize(the example car no less) and now the few that are left are Standards. That's what I would call an Aura too.
Personally, I always rent the lowest rate and usually don't accept upgrades. I am very tall and funny as it seems the small cars have more headroom, and are easier for me to get in and out of.
But in the spirit of the thread when last I was in Phoenix, I had a priceline bid for next to nothing accepted. I went to the counter and of course, they tried to upsell me. Now since it was for $10 /day and I was only renting for 2 days, I was inclined to at least look. Well the deal was for a Chevy malibu, and I almost bit, but regained my senses and asked,"Well what type was assigned to me already?" To make a long story short, I ordered an economy, and was given a brand new, fire engine red Mustang with the big engine. Suddenly, I simply couldn't afford the extra $20. Don't have a clue why though????

Car renting is just a twist on an old , old profession. The worst part of it is the local politicians that want you to visit their town and spend your money there, yet have the gall to charge 80% or more of the rental price in local taxes. I guess its easy to tax someone when the person who has to pay the taxes doesn't vote in your election, gutless but easy.

Its not only alamo who do this. The last 2 rentals i have had with Hertz have been the same-ATL.MSP.I booked the Chevvy Impala or similiar(prepaid from Australia) and got a chevvy Malibu.I booked the larger car for luggage capacity as we were on RTW trips. On one occasion all our luggage did not fit in the trunk of the Malibu. Both times I was told that the categories had just changed. When returning the second time at ORD I asked for the station manager who trotted out the same line-I asked when did this change happen as your desk chart still shows them as 2 different categories. He said that it was in the last 2 months-Oh so they lied to me 6 months ago in ATL when the same thing happened-got refunded the difference at that point.
