OK, here is the situation. Have two tickets, both in economy, 1 for me, one for wife, flying Auckland-Amsterdam via KL on Malaysian.
Because the wife is pregnant, we decided to buy her a business class ticket on the same flight.
So the question is, will Malaysian block the seat next to me in economy since we paid for it... but because she is now in business will they just use it for someone else if the flight is over booked??
Anyone have any insight into how this could be or will be handled?

If you're paid for it, you should be able to block it. I'd make sure the check in agent knows you have the two seats, otherwise they'd treat it as a no show. They might also cancel one or the other of her seats if they think it's a duplicate record.
Is there a FF number linking both of her seats? If not the computer will just assume it's a coincidence and everything will proceed as normal. I think you should check in her economy self and get a seat next to you. They shouldn't give that seat away until the boarding cutoff time. You can always try to VDB her if they are looking for volunteers. She may even get an op up to C
Actually.. you should just try to cancel and get a credit if you can but I guess you've already thought of that.

There is only a FF # linked to the economy seat at that was the original booking. So basically she has the economy seat and the business seat.. I think I will run this past Malaysian and ask them.. I'll let you guys know.
I can put up with a seat free next to me on such a long flight... I would be fuming if they filled the seat and we paid for it and a C class ticket...

in the first place, i think the system should see that one person with the same FF # is assigned 2 seats on the same flight. i wonder what will happen here. do you really need that seat? maybe you can opt for a refund or something?

The ticket is non-refundable for the eco ticket, and the business one is the good one to keep.. just want to keep the eco seat blocked if its paid for.
I was thinking about larger passengers who buy 2 tickets, what happens there?
Btw, couldn't get hold of them, need to wait until tomorrow. Thanks for the ideas people.

Called MH in KL and was told that the economy ticket would become invalid and cancelled. I asked about the "what about large people buying 2 seats and blocking the adjacent?".... apparently it has to be 2 seats in the same name.. not one in business and one in economy.
The ticket cannot be upgraded either from economy to business as the ticket in unable to be upgraded.. bummer.
Can't use airmiles (have enough on FlyingBlue) to buy a business ticket as apparently MH do not allow one way purchases... I don't know if that is KLM helpdesk nonsence but either way thats another thread.
I guess the next option is to look for the best business class option (i.e. cheapest) out of NZ. Any tips for that are welcome.
Thanks for your help guys.
