In order to a) keep the original thread focused on confirmed news and known facts, and b) allow folks a place to discuss their ideas about what might have happened, the MH370 moderators and Community Director have decided to open this thread.
Here are the expectations:
1. The normal FT TOS apply. (Including not discussing moderation actions on-thread). And please be particularly attentive to "discussing the idea and not the poster" when you have a disagreement. Civility and mutual respect are still expected and are what we owe each other as a community.
2. You are expected respect our diversity , and therefore refrain from posting inflammatory comments about race, religion, culture, politics, ethnicity, orientation, etc." Do not cite, copy, or report on such.
3. Please do continue to be attentive to the sensibilities of the families of those on the flight. Think about if you were them what you would and would not want to see posted. Speculation about what happened is permissible; please, though, do not indulge in inflammatory or overly-lurid descriptions that could well be hurtful.
4. Overly / extravagantly exaggerative posts such as conspiracy theories, posts beyond the realm of science and known facts, etc. as well as posts with information that has been posted several times previously, information that has been posted in the News thread wiki or FAQ, may be deleted. E.g. the aircraft was vaporized.
In terms of housekeeping, posts may get moved from the "news" thread if and as needed, and posts that do not conform to these simple expectations, above, will be deleted.
Also note: this wiki is locked; changes can only be made by moderators.

This drop down was shown several times on the Sky News UK today.. I was specifically waiting for the repeat and it did repeat the same story..

I suspect until the wreck is found we'll never know the truth, I just hope it's found quickly and the relatives don't have the agonizing wait that occurred with the AF crash.

Isn't this data from the primary military radar without the transponder sending the altitude? Not sure what the reliability of such altitude estimates are. I don't see how the plane would have survived such a manuever structurally in the time frame of that manuever. Is it possible that the reality was a 5000 ft drop from 45000, possibly from a stall, a recovery back to 35,000 ft and is being misreported?

If the plane starts to ascend, back the throttles off to slow the airspeed and the plane (if it doesn't totally stall and uncontrollably drop) will start to descend. Once the plane starts to descend, it picks up speed, creates lift, descent slows and possibly will start to ascend again. Couple this with a pilot manually manipulating the throttles in an effort to assist this action in order to control the planes vertical and horizontal movements and the resulting flight path would most likely be an up down wave pattern and theoretically could replicate 45,000 - 5,000 - 35,000 repeat repeat repeat.
Then again, 45,000 - 5,000 - 35,000 may never of actually happened.

Two questions that I haven't seen answered directly before:
1. Can a pilot intentionally depressurize an airplane at cruise altitude? Could the pilot have access to oxygen to stay alive while the oxygen available to passengers runs out.
2. People keep talking about passengers trying to make calls on cell phones, but even without trying to make calls, cell phones that are on will try to contact towers on the ground. If the contact is successful and a connection is established, the phone identifies itself to the tower and that information is recorded by the tower. Has there been any word from authorities that they have searched the phone records of all passengers and found that no pings occurred at any cell towers in the region (Indonesia, Central Asia etc.) after the flight took off?

If it is found here, it seems that the plane flew till it ran out of juice, either due to some technical issue or possibly something along the lines of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 961
