OTA / search engine to force direction (e.g. not via USA from Brazil > Europe)

We're trying to book a flight from Amsterdam (Netherlands) > New York (stayover 1 week) > Brazil (stayover 2 weeks) > Amsterdam (Netherlands).

However, each time our routing goes on the return back via the USA, while we would prefer a direct flight on the leg Brazil > Amsterdam. Is there a specific OTA or search engine that allows us to force this, or is it likely to be a rule of the airlines to only specific direction travel?

Example: https://www.kayak.co.uk/flights/AMS-...AMS/2016-08-29

Thank you.

Have you tried flights.google.com? I just did. The first several choices it gave me were direct from South America to Europe. Once you know pricing and routes, you can go to the airline site to book.

If you search through Kayak, you can choose the connecting airports (or to exclude connecting airports).

The issue in your case is that Delta flight combo is about 1000 GBP cheaper than anything else. The more direct options are around the 1500-2000+ pound mark.

This does work, although it will also hide connecting airports on the other legs (so if the second leg is JFK-ATL-GIG it won't show up even if the flight back to AMS avoids the US)

It's slightly more complicated, but you can use ITA matrix to specify layover airports for specific legs. FWIW, the cheapest that came up was €837 on United nonstop/United via IAH/Swiss via ZRH on the return.

The reason the return trip is also routed through the US is that you are flying a US-based carrier. Try to book two separate one-way tickets, though it's probably much more expensive than just flying both ways through the US.

Agree with bpe, best option is that UA/UA/Swiss ticket for about €860 now. Cheapest as well.
