My sister is having an anniversary dinner in Chicago this weekend and I have been hoping to find a reasonable last-minute fare from White Plains, NY (HPN). I signed up for fare alerts on kayak and I've also been checking kayak daily, but the lowest fare appears on kayak at $988.
A bit frustrated, this morning I decided to check the websites of the 2 carriers with non-stop flights -- United and AA. Lo and behold, I snagged 2 non-stop L-class tickets on United for $199 each.
What's up with that??? I'm happy with the outcome, but my world will be much more complicated if I can no longer count on kayak.
I'll admit that I know nil about the inner workings of websites "behind the scenes", but is it possible that United just dropped the fare for that routing very recently (earlier today, for example) and Kayak just hasn't caught up to it yet?

Airlines reprice fares constantly. It's possible they had very few seats, it's possible Kayak had not loaded the fare yet, there's a ton of reasons.
I think your mistake is in counting on any one place for deals, as such a place does not exist. You have learned that you need to constantly check for deals, as nobody will have them all. If they did, all the other agencies would be out of business.

UA does not currently publish any L-Class Fares on that route, all of the discounted Fares have 21/14/7-day Advance Purchase requirements, and the lowest Fare available for purchase on UA.com is currently $988 (MR0FN):

I just checked the United site, as I was curious, and if you book April 27-30 on this city pair, you can get a $221 all-in RT fare right now, and Kayak does not find this.
UA does not currently publish any L-Class Fares on that route .... the lowest Fare available for purchase on UA.com is currently $988 (MR0FN):

Which is why earlier I said there's not one place where you will find every fare. For a Friday Monday flight this weekend:

It also has a Sun night stay requirement (hence it did not show-up on a 27-29 Apr search previously).

I'm curious: What exactly is an "unpublished fare"?
In this case, it's a United E-fare weekend special, It's referred to as unpublished because they don't publish it so sites like Kayak, Orbitz, and Expedia can find it.
You need to search every available channel for low fares, as you found out one place may be saying it's $1,000 per person, another $200
