Refundable UL ticket - which one to buy?

Due to some commitments in the GCC and Asia, I am looking at buying a one-way UL ticket DOH-CMB in November. I would like to buy the ticket and if things don't work out get a refund when I return the ticket.

I was told UL has several different Business class tickets that allow for a refund minus a small surcharge (like 50 QAR).

Any suggestions - before I actually call UL in CMB and get their advice. Thanks in advance.

Even the cheapest public I- fare [IOWQA] only has a 100 QAR penalty for changes.

The next one up, DOWQA, has only a 70 QAR penalty. DOWQA is not much more expensive than IOWQA, only about 40 USD in it.

COWQA has a 50 QAR penalty and JOWQA has a 30 QAR penalty. These two are significantly more pricey.

I have not heard good things about dealing with UL on the phone directly so you may want to use a reputable travel agent to arrange this.

Unfortunately, in my past experience with travel agents (in the GCC) they seemed more interested in selling tickets than in helping with refunds. Twice burned now and now I triple (?) check before purchasing.

No matter, I still must plan and deal with some real uncertainties

Can you use a reputable travel agent located elsewhere? Perhaps AmEx PTS/CTS?

I've always booked direct with UL and have had to cancel a couple of times. The Sri Lanka based call centre is reasonably decent, though the accent might be a (minor) challenge.

Fairly straightforward to cancel, though it is a 2 step process: call them to cancel the booking and then raise a refund request via http://www.srilankan.com/en/plan-and-book/online-refund-request

Thanks folks for the "discussion". No matter, Calchas gave me the initial "heads up" wrt the cancellation fees. Now (after the additional comments) I have a better idea of what to do in case I need to cancel...
