(however you cannot book an itinerary with the first segment on QR)
Any idea when this will change? Can a xONEx be booked via phone with the first segment on QR?

Effective 1 November 2013, you may book Qatar Airways flights as part of oneworld Explorer and Global Explorer round-the-world fares, as well as, select Multi-continent and Single-continent fares.

NOTE: on 1 November 2013, Qatar Airways flights will not be available as the first segment of your itinerary when booking your oneworld Explorer itinerary through our online booking tool. To originate your oneworld Explorer itinerary on Qatar Airways please contact your Travel Agent or Qatar Airways http://www.qatarairways.com/contactus.
Looks like you need to go through QR. Of course the first sentence is wrong; QR joined the GLOB fares a while ago.

And not only not flying A321Ts but 2 class transcon flights in US will most likely mean a 737-800 where first class is more like a glorified coach but with food and booze .

I personally would forgo the Tier points (unless I absolutely need them) and travel in a much more pleasant business class either on old 3 class 767 or new A321T (if flying LAX/SFO-JFK)

I've actually put together an itinerary out of JNB jnb-DOH-dfw... but haven't called the QR yet and that seems to be the only way for now for DONEX with first segment on QR.

When you say "put together an itinerary", do you mean you were able to get it to work on the online tool?
Or did you just put it together on your own.

Good luck calling QR. A family member has called them 4 times and says they were completely clueless.

When the first flight is a QR or MH, the online tools still advised to call the respectively airlines. Came across that yesterday.

Is it still the case that xONEx bookings are problematic if QR is the first sector? The validator isn't offering me any QR flights for JNB-DOH as the first sector of a xONEx fare (it only offers flights via LHR on BA , HKG on CX etc as the first sector, not QR).

Will AA RTW desk ticket a xONEx with QR as the first sector?

You can not ticket with QR via the tool, thus it will not offer QR flights for the first sector.

Yes, so long as AA gets at least one AA coded intercontinental flight.

Codeshare will do

(for example I had AMM-JFK as my single AA flight on a DONE4, which is a codeshare on RJ metal)
