It ought to be in Hotel Deals. Go through the booking process, and you'll get a discount code for $25 off a 2-night stay. (No foolin'! Code is FOOLUS09.)
Threads like this always make me think of earlier times when jokes didn't need to be elaborate to convince people. The classic is the BBC Spaghetti trees:
I IM'd a coworker of mine who is always afraid I'm going to leave and expose his ignorance in the process that I tendered my notice...
I figured I'd let him stew a bit on it before I told him the truth. BIG mistake. Word spread majorly fast, and I was fending off e-mails and IM's from everyone one I knew shocked....
Well, it gets to HR... And of course, they have no record of it, so they call me and lecture me on proper protocol for submitting my notice.. Well, when I tried to explain it was an april fools joke gone awry, the fired me on the spot for violating the electronic communications policies of the firm, wasting time, and being insensitive when we've recently been laying off.
So now I am out of a job for a stupid joke IM to a friend.
On Facebook today, I posted live updates for my friends during my daytrip to Bermuda -- a trip that I take every April 1. It starts out somewhat believable if you can believe that someone would take a daytrip to Bermuda just for lunch. (Not so far fetched for some FTers, of course.)
But as the day goes on, the stories get more extreme and (IMO) more improbable. Nonetheless, the more improbable it gets, the more believable it apparently becomes for some people.
Today after my lobster and champagne lunch at the beach, I returned to the airport for my return flight back to CLT.
On my private jet.
That I designed and built.
As I do every year with a new jet for this annual trip.
After donating the previous year's jet to charity.
All this as a hobby.
Because my real job is a cartographer.
"And since I was a little kid, I have wanted to map out the Bermuda triangle and solve its mysteries."
And I've been published with the cover story of Cartography Quarterly -- as evidenced by my fake scan of the fake cover of the fake 4/1/2007 edition of this fake magazine.
Fortunately, I got a break from all this when I went offline as I flew through a fake "dead zone" where my fake satellite phone would not work. (Can you surf Facebook through a personal sat phone? Doesn't matter -- I made this stuff up as I went.)
On request of those who were so impressed by my being published in such a magazine as Cartography Quarterly, I posted a link to my article after I got home. It began...
Bermuda Underwater
How Many Wrecks Remain Uncharted?
Cartographer Quarterly
April 1, 2007 by SC Flier
Chief Cartographer, AFD Expeditions and Avionics, Inc.
The 2004 and 2005 hurricane seasons dramatically demonstrated the magnitude of the societal significance of AFD,...
...and continued with the facts of my day and the history of my annual Bermuda daytrip similar to the explanation above.
Happy April Fools’ Day!
If anyone would like to join me on my trip to Bermuda next year, let me know. For 7 years, I’ve been telling this story. But I want to go there for real, so I’ve already purchased a ticket on Delta nonstop from Charlotte to go next year on April 1, 2010. I’ve booked a 3 bedroom condo for a 3-day weekend, so there’s room for several couples. My travel agent can give you all the details.
FTers are welcome to come, too, if someone would like to start a FoolsDO 2010 thread in CommunityBuzz!
