greetings from the player's lounge (from the balcony I can overlook courts 3-6, and go online here while it is raining)
Good stuff (not the rain, but the Pimm's)

Hopefully they'll get the Safin beat down of Federer in!

right now you can bet 6:1 (Federer:Safin)

but my personal expectation is only 3:1 ... and my personal hopes are 100:0 ...

Safin beat down of Federer in

while, knowing your 'love' of my compatriote (and so guessing that the above means you hope that Safin beats Federer), I don't get the construction of the above sentence (Safin beat down of Federer in), what does the 'in' stand for? (please explain, or translate into swiss-german, thank you)

It's not so much hatred towards Federer but a love of seeing him lose.

In any event, the sentence is: "Hopefully they'll get the Safin beat down of Federer in!" meaning I hope that they (Safin and Federer) can get their match in today before the rain cancels play. So in this case "in" just refers to "get it in before the rain comes."

The construction was pretty poor; I agree.

I hope that they (Safin and Federer) can get their match in today before the rain cancels play.

chances for matches scheduled on center-court and court number one are not as bad as others.

matches on other courts did start at noon local time and are now suspended (and following matches delayed) - but on these 2 courts matches are only scheduled to start at 1pm (8am EST) and rain should stop any second now - we hope ...

RAIN STOPPED RIGHT NOW!

Center court:
1 Gentlemen's Singles - 3rd Rnd.
Janko Tipsarevic (SRB) v. Fernando Gonzalez (CHI)[5]
2 Ladies' Singles - 3rd Rnd. Milagros Sequera (VEN) v. Serena Williams (USA)[7]
3 Gentlemen's Singles - 3rd Rnd. Roger Federer (SUI)[1] v. Marat Safin (RUS)[26]

Court 1
1 Ladies' Singles - 3rd Rnd. Jelena Jankovic (SRB)[3] v. Lucie Safarova (CZE)[25]
2 Gentlemen's Singles - 3rd Rnd. James Blake (USA)[9] v. Juan Carlos Ferrero (ESP)[20]
3 Gentlemen's Singles - 3rd Rnd. Andy Roddick (USA)[3] v. Fernando Verdasco (ESP)

12.43pm: Good news! No more rain, sun coming out, covers coming off, play should start on time on Centre and No.1. Feel free to thank the messenger…

And in a shocking development, Blake has lost a close match in a Grand Slam. When is he going to break through and win one of these matches?

He is trash. He could learn a lot from Serena.

Quote:
"I don't think that Alicia heard that the ball was called out," said [Serena] Williams, a two-time Wimbledon champion. "She (de Jenken) said the ball was called out. If she wanted to challenge it, she could. I said, 'You may as well. I would have challenged it, too. I'm not upset. I'm not going to hold it against you."'
It was quite amicable.

...when he learns to be more aggressive at the net.

That's part of it, but I think it is mostly mental. It just seems like he doesn't have the balls (can I say that in OMNI?) to win the big ones. He does fine with his game all the other times, but when he gets in a big match, he just folds.

I was amazed how well Serena dealt with the situation. She has her moments too, but nothing like her dad.

My cynical answer is the fact that the out call was indeed correct and Serena knew it. Yet her father still acted like the low-class scum he is by being "outraged".

Especially today. He lost to Ferrerro? He's not exactly a grass court specialist.
