I appreciate your on-the-ground/local insight aceflyer2, and it's information I'll use to evaluate him in a few years. For now, I would describe my position on Gov. Jindal as "generally positive/ somewhat reeling from that speech/ wait and see what happens in LA" - he's only been governor for about 18 months.

Still time for him to resign early and give a rambling speech with the reasons why, then.

If he does so, he should do it on Sesame Street. His speaking stlye is perfect for that. As a matter of fact, he should consider a career change to children's television.

There are two post that claim tax cuts for the "rich/wealthy". I know those words get thrown around frequently and I'm curious to hear what "wealthy" is in a number, according to the state of LA or the posters in this thread. Is it income based? Asset's? Everyone seems to hate the rich, but who are are talking about?

I'm STILL blown away at that prime time boondoggle. I've heard him speak in the past, and it was the exact opposite of what we all witnessed that day; I'm not sure what happened

I'm willing to chalk it up to a bad night, and potentially poor advice from national handlers suggesting that he try to relate to the "common man" approach. Gov. Jindal is an absolute super-freak of a brainy guy, and it's difficult to see that talk as anything but an aberration.

His name is make believe too. His real name is Piyush
Amrit Jindal. He styled himself and his name after one of the Brady Bunch.

He says health care (mainly affects the poor) and higher education must be cut now because the stimulus will run out in 2-3 years. How does he know what the state's financial condition will be in 3 years? If the economy is growing and oil prices remain high, we'll have a budget surplus then. In fact, if oil prices remain at the present level, we'll have a several hundred million dollar surplus this year that can't be used for operations (can you imagine a budget surplus while decimating health care and education?) Again these are NOT actions of a 'smart' leader. These are actions of a politician and not a smart one. I'm hearing many Republicans say they will not vote for him in 3 years. I would not be surprised to see Blanco run in 3 years and win in a landslide. If the Republicans place their hopes on him (at the national level), they are surely desparate.
My GOD is this man INSANE? You mean that LA might actually NOT run a deficit in spending in 2009? ABSOLUTELY CRAZY!

Doesn't he know that the people have spoken and DEMAND deficit spending? Unbelievable!

Unlike Bush, Palin and McCain, Jindal performed well in school. His daddy wasn't nan ex-President, or an ex-Admiral. But he does sound somewhat dumb. Maybe he had to stlye himself after rank and file of the party.

He insisted on drastic cuts, while at the same time, promoting (and the legislature passed) a tax cut for the wealthy- those with excess itemized deductions-. LA is one of the states in the best financial condition in the country. However, when the budget was proposed, he (he is on the Revenue estimating Conference) made sure that oil prices were budged at $49 per barrel, even though it is close to $70 per barrel. Interestingly, if oil prices had just been budgeted just $10 per barrel more, no cuts would have been necessary. Also, he refused to accept stimulus money for the umemployed. I don't think Jindal will be re-elected in 3 years (I'm even hearing this from staunch Republicans).
So let me get this straight: there is a Governor who heads a state that "is in one of the best financial conditions in the country", he's budgeting conservatively for oil prices even though there's a major source of revenue for his state, he's attempting to balance the budget, not bankrupt the state's rainy day fund, and he's rejecting federal bailout money from the taxpayers of other states, and these are strikes against him?

No wonder Barack Obama got elected President. Competence, business savvy, experience and common sense are apparently poor attributes these days.

As I read this thread all I could think of was that I disagree with how you framed the question. I don't think Jindal is an "important GOP governor". I think he is just a side show being thrown out right when the GOP needed some color in its national image.

Don't get me wrong, he may be an effective governor of the state and a good man. I just don't see what he has done to earn the "important" phraseology.

It is remarkable that someone with such strong and legit credentials as Jindal gets sent back down after one shelling; yet Palin, with a resume full of skidmarks, stays in the lineup, gaffe after gaffe

That is a REALLY interesting point. I hadnt thought of it in that way. I think it speaks volumes about the current state of the GOP now that you mention it.

Bingo! That's why I refuse to pile on Gov. Jindal. Dude had one bad speech, big freaking deal, it happens. Overall, his portfolio of accomplishment is outstanding, and I think it points to a great future.
