Mumbai rocked by deadly shootings---BBC

Breaking news on the wires of multiple terrorist attacks in Mumbai..US news channels haven't picked it up yet except for CNBC and CNNI.

Gunmen have opened fire at a number of sites in the Indian city of Mumbai (Bombay), reportedly killing at least 10 people and injuring others.

Police said the shootings appeared to be terrorist attacks.

Gunmen opened fire at seven sites including a train station and a restaurant popular with tourists.

Shootings were also reported near two hotels and at a hospital. At least two blasts, suspected to be grenade attacks, were reported.

Sajjad Karim, an MEP for the North West of England who is in Mumbai, told the BBC he had seen a gunman opening fire in the lobby of Taj Mahal Palace Hotel.

He said he had seen people fall before fleeing to a restaurant, where the doors had been barricaded.

"All I saw was one man on foot carrying a machine gun type of weapon - which I then saw him firing from and I saw people hitting the floor, people right next to me," he said.

I know it's too early to speculate, but I wonder if this is one of those vanishingly rare situations in which religious beliefs are used to do evil rather than good.

Great, the GF is heading there at the weekend.

Anyone got a flak jacket (size 14 UK) she could have as an early Christmas present?

Most of the [recent] attacks have been blamed on Muslim militants, although police have also arrested suspected Hindu extremists.

Islamic facism - a dumb idea that persists in the minds of individuals that are obsessed by Fixed News. And I love how some people instantly blame Islam for every act of violence committed anywhere in the world. Does anyone remember the early assumptions after the OKC bombing? Islamic militants have a lot more in common with evangelical conservatives than they do actual facists.

Couldn't disagree with you more. There are fascists in every religion, whether it be Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, etc. What's dumb is people feeling that they have to be so politically correct that they could never use the words Islamic Fascism side by side, yet they will compare Islamic militants and evangelical conservatives. They can deny it all they want, but anyone who uses religion as a justification for terror and murder is a fascist as far as I'm concerned.

Sorry to take this off topic.

To further take this off topic...

Muslim-Hindu relations are very fragile at best in India, and there have been many events in the past that make religious tension a very viable motive for terrorist attacks there.

CNNIBN is saying it's up to 55 casualties.

Then please read this detailed definition of facism and show me where Islamic extremists fit the definition. Islamic extremists want to install theocracies, which is a major goal of Christian evangelicals. Facism is as much about economics as it is about totalitarianism. Islamic militants are not very concerned about economic systems.

I know people like to throw the word around, but you're using a dumbed-down definition that consists only of the advocacy of violent action. As pointed out above, read up on the definition of the term, or, better yet, take a course on fascism. They are not fascists.

I really don't think the fascists versus extremest discussion matters to the people in Mumbai right now..
Cheers
