Sorry, this is complete BS. You are just trying to justify your xenophobia. Militant Hindus, encouraged and legitimized by the likes of the BJP and the Shiv Sena, have been responsible for countless unprovoked atrocities against Muslims and Christians. These are the people that are perverting the principles of Hinduism.
What I am trying to comprehend is why you would continue to indulge and dignify with responses, the wild rants of a person, who is in some kind of self-involved disconnect with the reality of India's (most recently Maharashtra's) not-so-new divisive politics and the violence perpetuated on minorities all over the country, later denied legal recourse, with the blessing of Hindu militant leadership.
Your discourse is civil, and your arguments articulate. Kudos on that.
and it is people like you who justify others pushing of Hindus. Hindus are walked on, beaten, talked bad/rude about and all in the while we just sit and take it. We do not fight back...Once in a while one must fight back to preserve his dignity.
Everybody knowsthat India will not lift a finger after this...as we just talk but do not show any action.
I am not a militant Hindu, but I am tired of seeing my country and my people being talked down to, stepped on and just plain pushed around.
Does anyone do that to the USA? NO. Why...because Americans hit back and we hit back hard.
This is not believable, since India is totally dominated by Hindus, both politically and economically. You are simply a bigot, a fact reinforced every time you say, "these people".

The rest of the world in not dominated by Hindus....I am not specifically talking India.
Again, you are on your western high horse, so when you do decide to come down and see the world with your eyes, and have some presonal experience to back it up, then we can talk.
I am more than willing to buy you lunch and explain my perpective but not over an online forum. I am en educated person who has rational thought and feelings and I do admit emotion gets the better of me sometimes, but I do cool down and come to terms. But I do not need to explain it to everyone.
Until then...goodluck and godspeed !!

I hope you realize that the thoughts and feelings you displayed here were not rational. Perhaps you should review your posts before sending them. That's what I do. Usually several times.
What they are doing is not honorable and they should be swiftly put down. India should go into Pakistan and give them such a beating that the terrosists camps will take a long time to recover. India can never get rid of these people, but putting them back to the stone age should give us a few years of peace. If they do not do this, then what is the point of having the worlds 2nd largest army?
I have friends at the LOC -- Commanders of regiments -- ready and itching for a shot at Pakistan. They are just waiting for the word. !!
Even though I am an Indian christian and disagree with some of your views on Hindu-Christian issues on India, I think that Hindus have been taking a lot of crap from muslims lately and I would love to see Pakistan get a solid thrashing.

What is your level of exposure to India? I am an Indian christian and feel that there are opportunities for all. where else do you see two minorities being president and PM at the same time?
If you haven't lived in India, then you are an ignorant armchair critic. I grew up in India and know a thing or two.

Are you an Indian or an American?

Someone who is so lacking in understanding of numbers should not be using them as proof. What percentage of Muslims worldwide are terrorists? A vanishingly small portion. Yet you want to kill 'em all - a fifth of the world's population. You are insane.
I don't agree with killing them. my definition of terrorists are not just the actual perpetrators but all those who encouraged and nutured their policy of hate. their parents/siblings/teachers. there are many surveys among the islamic world which show that a majority of people celebrate when terrorist attack and that a majority of ppl emotionally support them. when children see their role models support such acts it inspires them to do the same. so for every terrorist there are many many co-conspirators.
seriously wake up. some minority

and in most of the current conflicts in the world today, there is at least one islamic group. they just cannot live in peace with others. peace, minority & islam do not belong in the same sentence.

There are certainly ample opportunities for the educated elite, especially in cosmopolitan urban areas, similar to those found in the US for blacks, which is how Obama was able to get elected to the Presidency.
Blacks are still discriminated against in the great heartland of the US, and Muslims and Christians are still oppressed in the rural, poor areas of India. Earlier in the thread I pointed to this article, which should make you, as an Indian Christian, quite angry. This is a recent and hardly isolated incident.
My dad grew up in India in a Hindu family (although we are not religious), and in recent years I have visited India often to see his side of the family and his friends (half of whom are Muslims and Christians), so I am certainly not an armchair critic (and I realize that you didn't specifically call me one).

Question for Yaatri because I know that you grew up in India and are still in touch with people there.
1. What % of the population does speak Hindi and do they do so in the Maharashtra state ( I thought that the lingua franca would be Marathi based on my understanding of the language of the descendants of people from that state in parts of Africa) ? I know that some Indian actress made a big boo-boo on David Letterman's show by saying that Hindi is the official language.
2. Is it common for non-Hindus to speak Hindi in states where Hindi is the Lingua Franca.
Reason I am asking:
a. the e-mail supposedly sent by the Daccan Mujahideen was written in Hindi
b. the Chef who was shot 4 times at the Taj was addressed in Hindi by one of the terrorists.
A young rabbi and his wife who moved from Brooklyn to Mumbai to run a Jewish center in India’s commercial capital were among those killed in a series of coordinated terrorist attacks, the Chabad-Lubavitch organization said on Friday.
In 2003, Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg and his wife, Rivka, left New York to run the Chabad center known as the Nariman House, where they managed a synagogue and led religious classes and other social and outreach activities at the center, one of about 3,500 outposts around the world run by the Lubavitch Hasidic movement.
“Gabi and Rivky Holtzberg made the ultimate sacrifice,” Rabbi Moshe Kotlarsky, vice chairman of Merkos L’Inyonei Chinuch, the educational arm of Chabad-Lubavitch, said in a statement. “Their selfless love will live on with all the people they touched. We will continue the work they started.”
News reports have said that five people taken hostage at the Nariman

Thanks for your answer
As I understand it, Hindi and English are the primary and secondary official languages of India. However, there is no national language. Each state can also have its own official language, and most do.
Most Indians speak at least a bit of Hindi, except in the south where it is vigorously resisted. In cities like Mumbai, nearly everyone speaks adequate Hindi.
I believe Hindi was declared the official language after independence because the ruling party was dominated by north Indians. Other states have never really accepted it as the national language.
[Edited to add:] Also, my understanding is that the words Hindu and Hindi are not directly related, except that they both derive from Hind, a corrupted pronunciation of the area around the Indus Valley where Indian civilization is thought to have arisen. There are many Hindus who speak no Hindi, and there are many non-Hindus whose native language is Hindi.

Yes it does pain me, which is why I specifically mentioned that i might disagree with annagie on christian-hindu issues, but agree with him for the most part about Hindu-muslim issues.
may i ask if you have lived in India?
