For those who are no longer capable of understanding what those big words mean, "shrinks listeners' intellectual capital" = listening to Rush makes you stupid.
As much as I get a kick out of listening to the people here in the DFW area call into the local talk radio shows and spout off some of the most crazy things in support of everything "Right, religious and conservative", I can't limit the linked article to just people who listen to right-wing opinion people.
I think what's mentioned in the article can be said for ANYONE who relies on someone else to do their critical thinking FOR them. While left-wing talk isn't nearly as prominent as right-wing talk, I know left-wing people who are just as rabid for Olbermann as right-wing people are for Rush.
The thing they have in common is they don't question anything once they hear it from their side. They just wait for the next serving. There's no desire to do their own research. In a way, it's almost like a religion. The religion is Democrat or Republican, the preachers are Rush, Hannity, Beck, Olbermann and the antagonist/evil is the Democrats if you are a Republican or the Republicans if you are a Democrat.
Just like in religion, the preachers (Rush, Hannity, Beck, Olbermann) make the money by getting the followers all fired up about that day's evil. The collection plate is passed (sponsors pay the stations, stations pay the preachers) and it starts all over again the next day.
Just like with religion, "talk" provides easy answers.

But it seems to me (from the posts here at FT anyway) that most of the listeners are liberals. You guys seem to know more about those talk shows and their hosts than anyone else.

...which really proves the OP's point, no?

The only person I've ever heard say they listen to him every day is a liberal...of the "enlightened NE kind", and I'd suggest this article hits the nail on the head!

But, once again, the only ones who seem to get "all fired up" is, well, you guys.
Anybody who tunes in to a host who calls his followers "dittoheads" is already low in intellectual capital.
And you must be anti-intellectual (or brain dead) to listen to Monica Crowley in the first place.
I do listen to Tom Marr in Baltimore from time to time just to raise my blood pressure and to hear what the far, far, far right is saying (Obama is a Marxist, all Muslims hate the US, and the war on Christmas is as much a fear factor as terrorists).

Careful. You talk like that and you'll be thrown into the "You guy all fired up" club.

How can you stand it? I can't even stand listening to left wing radio. The only one I can stand is Dr. Laura, not because I agree with her, but because she is so funny. She completely misunderstands the question she's asked, goes off on her tangent, abuses the caller and the caller never gets the answer. It's all quite fun.
