Question Today's Referendum Votes

What does it mean?

Some of us heard quite a bit of chest thumping the last two election cycles. Where are the chest thumpers now?

The only referendum I'm aware of is in Maine, a vote to re-ban gay marriage.

So far it is losing.

Any more states considering legalizing (medical) marijuana?

Right now (6:21 PST )
the Maine gay marriage ban is losing 52-47 (good)

And medical marijuana is winning 64-35.

Maine is currently in the freedom lane!

I am still waiting for one instance where a gay marriage has had any detrimental impact on the marriage of a straight couple.

Surely for all the rhetoric we have heard that gay marriage is a threat to straight marriage certainly there must be one couple willing to come forward and state that their marriage would have survived or they wouldn't have been fighting over money or marital fidelity if it weren't for that darn married gay couple living two streets over.

Zero for 31. Time for a new strategy perhaps?

1 This is not a fit subject for popular votes.

2 Those of you in the US with any love for civil rights for must redouble your efforts against the evil religious bigotry (led in Maine by that peddler of lies, the Church of Rome) which pushes the less well educated to vote people's civil rights away.

My sincere commiserations to the people in Maine who have their basic rights taken away by religious institutions which are the moral equivalent of the KKK.

Had interracial marriage been a subject for popular votes, it would not have won until approximately 1991. Had school segregation been up for popular vote, who knows how long it would have survived. The whole point of an equal protection clause is to protect the unpopular minority against the bigotry of the majority.

The evil forces of discrimination will be defeated in time.

I hope so, but it is a sad day for America, at which its friends in the rest of the civilised world can only look on bemused as the forces of religious reaction strike yet again.

It will be interesting to see the demographic breakdown of the majority vote,. I bet anyone who can collect one pint of beer that a yes vote correlates with a higher level of education and a lower level of religious observance.

I agree with your first point.

I highly doubt the second.
