Hotels Prices in Australia

I am considering going from Indonesia to Australia in late May-early June (Perth, Darwin and/or Cairns) but flights in between cities and the hotel prices are so high. Are there any websites I should check out to find good deals or is it just standard practice for prices to be this high in those cities?

Australian hotel rates are high compared to many countries.
Look at the chain web sites.
Or the on line hotel booking sites like https://www.wotif.com/, , https://au.hotels.com/ and http://www.trivago.com/ There others like these.

It is a 4 hour flight from Perth to the east coast
Airlines that fly in Australia domestically
- Virgin Australia (Delta partner)
- Jetstar (a low cost carrier with low-medium-high priced fares owned by QF)
- Qantas [OneWorld Alliance]
- Tiger Airways (a low cost carrier with low fares part owned by Virgin Australia)
- Regional Express Airways (REX) Regional airline

The larger chains such as Accor regularly have sales which discount prices by up to 50% but this works only if you can buy ahead and have date flexibility. There are also some hostels (YHA) that are surprisingly good quality, for example at Sydney Central Station (haven't personally stayed there, but worth a look if looking for cheaper options). But in general Sydney/Melbourne/Perth have some of the most expensive hotels in the world for their category even at the lower AUD exchange rate. Location comes at a price.

That's getting close to backpacker range. You will not get much for that money in a main city. In country areas you can pay $100 for a very average motel:- a big city more.

Look for Au$100 in http://www.trivago.com.au or www.hotels.com.au
Accor.com.au "ibis budget" brand is getting close to your $100. $120 will get you more options

Unfortunately, decent accommodation within this price range is very difficult to find in Australia.
Australian hotels are among the most overpriced in the world.

There are, of course, exceptions. Last time I was in Perth, I stay at Mountway Apartments:

www.mountwayapartments.com.au

It's not luxury, but I found it had everything I needed.

I can't comment for Darwin or Cairns.

As you've found hotels are quite pricey in Australia. The good news is, hostels can be of very high quality here. Consider a private room in a hostel if on a budget. Many also include airport transfer and other perks for the budget-minded traveler.

Not yet mentioned here but wotif.com is a good resource for hotels and apartment rentals.

There isn't much you can do about flight prices except keep an eye out for deals.
